The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC is a personal, concierge oncology clinic providing individualized, high quality care to our patients. We aim to advance the prevention and care of cancer through the latest biomedical research, personalized medicine, and clinical trials. Overall responsibilities include:
The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison within USC, leadership, and oncologic and preventive patient care management. The NP will provide guidance, direction, and assistance to the healthcare team in maintaining optimum quality of care of cancer patients.
Specific responsibilities include:
Conducts in-depth interviews with patient and obtains medical histories
Identifies and records pertinent progress of patients, updating and summarizing charts, changing orders when appropriate and notifying the responsible physician of changes in patients’ conditions
Manages treatment of hospitalized patients, in coordination with provider
Performs appropriate physical examinations and procedures such as injections and immunizations
Develops and implements patient management plans, including the coordination of referrals to specialty and social services
Directly performs or orders appropriate diagnostic studies
Initiates consultations and monitors scheduling of patients for diagnostics studies
Performs and/or interprets common laboratory, radiological, and other routine diagnostic testing
Writes appropriate medication prescriptions
Provides continuity of care in the management of complex illnesses under the supervision of a physician.
Oversees the administration of chemotherapy/investigational drugs and covers the clinic’s low-volume infusion area in case of life-threatening reactions
Counsels patients on preventive care, treatment, and diagnoses
Acts as liaison with USC personnel, governmental agencies, vendors, etc. as appropriate
Maintains compliance with established University and department policies and procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control and complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
Participates in in-service education programs and professional associations.
Master of Nursing Degree required
Current and valid California State RN and Nurse Practitioner licenses
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing as defined in Section 1482, Nurse Practice Act, Business and Professional Code.
National Certification or Eligibility for certification as a Nurse Practitioner
Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications
Minimum 5 years’ experience as a staff nurse, at least 1 year in Oncology, in ambulatory and/or acute care setting
Excellent IV skills preferred
Competency in administering chemotherapy & vascular access device management
OCN certification preferred
Extreme attention to detail.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to function on a team.
Good organizational skills.
Basic proficiency in computer-based medical record retrieval, data entry, and database programs.
Knowledge of applicable laws/policies/principles/etc.
Preferred Education: Master’s Degree
Preferred Experience: 5 Years, combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience
Preferred Field of Expertise: Possession of current certificate of completion from a Nurse Practitioner program. Current and valid California State RN and Nurse Practitioner licenses, and Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification. Clinical nursing experience.
