Respiratory Care Practitioner I - Respiratory Therapy - Fixed-Term (90 Days) Per Diem Variable Shifts

Verdugo Hills Hospital - Respiratory Therapy Hospital Glendale, California

Statement of Purpose:

Under direct supervision of the Clinical Director, and as directed by physician, set up and operate various types of respiratory care equipment to be utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease and/or illness.

Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete ventilator and circuit checks every two hours.
  • Circuit changed as needed, E.T. tube size and placement charted each shift.
  • Deliver meds as ordered by the physician. Frequency, time, and meds documented.
  • Document ventilator checks and critical blood gas results notification in timely manner to MD/RN and in the electronic medical record.
  • Document required information on all appropriate respiratory forms including quality management, audits, quality control on the blood gas machines, multi-disciplinary care plans.
  • Respond to and document all code blue, rapid response, code stroke and therapy assists.
  • Start all physician orders within designated time frame according to frequency of treatment and follow procedures as outlined in policy procedure manual.
  • Check for correctness of orders.      
  • Blood gas machine quality control should be performed by changing measurement cartridges and running solutions every shift.      
  • Follow policy and procedure as outlined in manual for cleaning and setting up equipment.
  • Equipment to be brought down by therapist upon discontinuance of therapy.        
  • Equipment to be cleaned and set up on same shift equipment was DC’d.  (When work load does not permit, the next shift will pick up what is left over, etc.)
  • Tanks checked every shift in assigned unit and replace if 500 psi or less
  • Perform treatments in a manner, utilizing equipment and procedures appropriate for the patient's age group.
  • Adheres to written hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participates in daily multidisciplinary rounds
  • Provides patient education regarding cardio-pulmonary treatments and care
  • Attends daily department huddles
  • Completes charge entry
  • Keeps respiratory stock at par levels
  • Orients new staff members to department and hospital routines
  • Supports education experience of RT and RN students
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education: Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy, Bachelor Degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred. Minimum Experience/Knowledge: 1-2 years of experience working as a Respiratory Therapist in an Acute Care Hospital setting preferred. Required License/Certification: Valid California Respiratory Care Practitioner License. Valid RRT and CRT Licensure NRP, BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications required from the American Heart Association.
