Keck Medicine of USC includes the Keck School of Medicine of USC, the region’s first medical school; the renowned USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the first comprehensive cancer centers established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States; the USC Care Medical Group, a medical faculty practice; the Keck Medical Center of USC, which includes two acute care hospitals: 401-licensed bed Keck Hospital of USC and 60-licensed bed USC Norris Cancer Hospital; and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, a 158-licensed bed community hospital. Unit Supervisor RN - Geropsych - Full-Time 12 Hour Days

Statement of Purpose:
The Shift Supervisor is a Registered Nurse with recognized leadership abilities and sound clinical skills who will actively supervise a designated nursing station on a designated shift. Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, and working collaboratively with the Coordinator and the Nursing Director, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for staffing, scheduling, problem-solving, performance improvement, job performance evaluation, setting expectations, working with Directors and preceptors in the orientation and training of new employees, and other supervisory responsibilities of a similar nature.

HUMAN RESOURCES
• Evaluates staff on clinical performances, provides direct feedback and annual review assessment.
• Performs counseling with staff as needed.
• Monitors attendance, overtime usage, and missed Kronos punches.
• Creates action plans for improvement of clinical care or other administrative areas and monitors staff compliance to same.
ORGANIZATION
• Manages own time effectively. Able to organize and prioritize responsibilities
• Manages organization of staff duties for shift, ensure, all meals periods and rest breaks are taken and staff complete shift duties on time.
• Approves overtime when necessary and monitors overtime usage with regular reports to director.
BUDGET
• Manages the daily staffing per budgeted unit hours per patient day.
• Flexes staff as needed for census fluctuations and changes in patient care needs.
• Ensures adequate unit supplies are maintained (without excess overstocking)
• Monitors equipment needs and repairs in collaboration with the director.
REGULATORY AGENCY REQUIREMENTS
• Oversees daily environment of care to ensure unit meets regulatory agency requirements.
• Monitors staff practice and documentation to ensure regulatory agency requirements are met. Counsels staff as needed.
CLINICAL SUPPORT
• Monitors staff performance against policy and standards.
• Assists staff with interventions and evaluations for care need.
• Ensures and assists staff with completion and revision of Plan of Care and Education.
• Serves as a resource for staff and provides direction for clinical follow-through.
o Is liaison to the Medical Staff
o Facilitates MDP rounds
o Ensures hourly rounding and walking report.
• Participates in audits and other data collection projects, analyzes data and makes recommendations to clinical coordinator for improvement.
OBSERVES REGULATORY AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Stays current with knowledge of the following and coaches staff on non-compliance.
• National Patient Safety Goals
o Patient identifiers

o Universal Protocol (Procedural Time Out)

DOCUMENTATION
Ensures documentation is complete and correct on all flow sheets and chart forms:
• Ensures orders are transcribed and signed off prior to the end of the shift.
• Ensures completion of 12h/24h chart checks
QUALITY MEASURES
• Accurately identifies patients that fit Core Measure criteria.
• Identifies items meeting Great Catch definition, reviews with staff and encourages reporting.
• Completes Core Measure Documentation
• Identifies and participates in data collections and process improvements related to Nurse Sensitive Quality Indicators.
STAFFING
• Prepares staff schedule with staff input.
• Assigns patients based upon patient acuity and staff competence, and adjusts assignments as needed.
• Assigns break/lunch times and ensures staff relief.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
• Participates in professional hospital/nursing activities.
