Accounting Technician

USC Transportation - Permit Sales and Audit Los Angeles, California

In the ever expanding city of Los Angeles, Trojans need reliable and convenient transportation options. USC Transportation has risen to meet that need, operating parking structures, busses, student-run Campus Cruisers and a fuel station. To meet the unique needs of each Trojan, Transportation also coordinates with numerous taxi companies and rental car agencies to provide a vast source of transit options. A division of USC Auxiliary Services, Transportation is always looking for new ways to make USC safer and more convenient for students, athletes, faculty, staff, and visitors.

We are seeking an Accounting Technician to join our rapidly growing team.

The Opportunity:

If you enjoy balancing ledgers and preparing accounting reports, then our team is for you! As an Accounting Technician, you will take ownership of all the general accounting processes that our Department requires monthly and annually. We are here to support our customers with the utmost professionalism, efficiency, accuracy and quality service. You need to be organized, communicative, and, most of all, always eager to help. Accounting is our business and our passion, and we take our work seriously.

The Accountabilities:

  • Set up and maintain accounts, ledgers, journals, files, blanket requisitions, reports, and/or other documentation for departmental or university accounts. Assist with month-end and year-end closings, as needed.
  • Enter data from various source documents into accounting systems. Review source data for completeness and accuracy prior to input. Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations and restrictions. Reject and return documentation as appropriate.
  • Monitor internal financial operations. Evaluate procedures and controls for adequacy. Recommend changes or modifications.
  • Collect and format data for special projects and management studies. Prepare various financial reports, as required.
  • Record, balance, and reconcile account activity. Identify potential problems and research to provide background or comments. Produce and distribute related reports. Verify accuracy of reports prior to distribution. Maintain documentation for audit purposes.
  • Monitor outstanding or suspense items. Research documents and follow-up to clear or adjust items.
  • Perform one or more specialized accounting duties including, but not limited to, monitoring receivables, collecting past-due accounts, controlling cash or negotiable items, and monitoring related inventory procedures.
  • Record and reconcile income and expenses. Monitor actual performance to budget and prepare reports.
  • Approve and process budget amendments, account charges, expense transfers, and closing entries and reports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The Qualifiers:

  • Education: Associate’s Degree.
  • Experience: 1 year.
  • Expertise:
    • Related bookkeeping and/or accounting experience.
    • Knowledge of bookkeeping and/or accounting practices and principles.
    • Ability to use a variety of bookkeeping and/or accounting software applications such as databases, spreadsheets, etc.
    • Demonstrated customer service skills.
    • Presents oneself professionally, in line with higher education environment.
    • Must possess valid driver's license

What We Prefer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 2 years of University accounting experience.
  • Ability to supervise student, temporary, and/or resource workers.
