Animal Laboratory Tech I

Under direct supervision, the Animal Laboratory Technician I provides husbandry routine care to animals for experimental use. Perform routine animal husbandry tasks including cleaning, watering, and feeding of laboratory animals following guidelines of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science Manual for Laboratory Technicians, departmental procedures, and “The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”. The Animal Laboratory Technician I will clean and maintains enclosures and related ancillary equipment following departmental procedures. Observe animal behavior and appearance and report subtle changes to veterinary staff. Operate a cage washer for cleaning and sanitization of cages, racks, trays, and pans. Operate sterilizer machine to sterilize caging equipment for the animals. Wash and sterilize water bottles, sipper tubes, and stoppers. Must be available to work in multiple facilities on two campuses and to work on weekends and holidays


  • Performs routine cleaning of animal cages and associated animal care equipment. Maintains and cleans animal housing facilities
  • Ensures animal care areas are maintained in clean and sanitary conditions by scrubbing down the ceilings, walls, and floors at prescribed intervals following departmental procedures
  • Distributes food and water to animals and ensures that food and water are free from contamination
  • Ensures and evaluates environmental enrichment in animal enclosures
  • Provides humane euthanasia to animals as needed to minimize pain and distress and for colony maintenance
  • Maintain animal identification cards and inventory records, room environment reports, environmental enrichment logs of all animals, maintain cage washing and/or autoclaving logs in assigned areas
  • Evaluates animals for health and welfare on a daily basis. Communicates electronically and/or verbally, animal health or welfare problems to veterinary staff and the Principal Investigator
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of cages, equipment, and facilities. Maintains inventory of storeroom supplies
  • Maintains paper and computerized animal records, records of facility cleaning and sanitation procedures, facility environmental conditions, and use and maintenance of equipment
  • Carries out the appropriate labeling and disposal of animals euthanized, including bio-hazardous animals
  • Documents activities as required by regulations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School or equivalent. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education1 year, Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experienceAbility to begin educational programs leading to examination at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or other relevant Biological Science.2 years of experience in laboratory animal care or animal care in a veterinary hospital or kennel.Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification by the American Association of Laboratory Science


Personal computer and associated software, printer, and fax and Electronic handheld devices Ability to communicate well (written and oral) with people with a variety of educational and experiential backgrounds Mechanical cage washing and other facility sanitation equipment Autoclave and other sterilization equipment Ability to drive USC animal transportation vehicles Must be able to follow health, safety, and security procedures
