The Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) is seeking a Vice Chair of Research and Scholarship in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Vice Chair of Research and Scholarship will report directly to the Department Chair as a member of the senior leadership team. He or she will be responsible for building and maintaining an environment where scholarly activity by both trainees and faculty can flourish.
The Vice Chair of Research and Scholarship has five major areas of responsibility:
Collaborating with faculty towards the development of a cohesive short and long-term research agenda with strategies for its successful implementation.
Developing and overseeing a portfolio of sponsored and scholarly research and/or projects in conjunction with the management of a research administration group aimed at supporting the portfolio.
Ensuring that all research activities follow the regulations set by research administration at the Keck School of Medicine and Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center.
Providing the resources and guidance to ensure that faculty are able to pursue scholarly work that will enhance their professional development and the development of mentees.
Engaging, inspiring, and managing medical students, residents, and fellows desiring to undertake scholarly projects in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Collaborate with faculty to create an environment that supports research and scholarship
Ensure that adequate support resources are available to enable successful scholarly work including a consulting statistician (and other quantitative and qualitative technical expertise as needed), project managers, and research assistants
Collaborate on identifying appropriate mentors for faculty scholarship
Oversee development and management of databases for faculty scholarly work, as well as other curated datasets
Supervise research staff, such as study coordinators and research assistants.
Develop research plans and protocols, as well as research tools/measures/schedules.
Oversee research activities, such as data collection, management, analysis, and dissemination.
Seek, establish, and maintain ongoing relationships with research partners.
Link interested students and faculty to senior scholars for participation in research and scholarship
Ensure that the sponsored research administration group is functioning effectively and serving the needs of faculty and students
Collaborate with the KSOM Department of Contracts and Grants to ensure that extramurally funded grants and contracts are managed in line with funder expectations
Oversee the ongoing development of policies, procedures and practices that faculty and students must adhere to in seeking extramural funding and in doing the work supported through that funding mechanism
Maintain an effective working relationship with the KSOM Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Minimum five (5) years of experience in managing research and other scholarly activity, with experience in the fields of Obstetrics and Gynecology and reproductive health.
MD, MD/PhD, PhD, or equivalent degree
National reputation in Obstetrics & Gynecology or a relevant field of research with a track record of publications, extramural grants, invited speaking opportunities, and other scholarly activities.
Evidence of successful mentoring of early candidates at different levels of training, from medical student through resident and fellow.
Evidence of successful collaboration with and mentoring of faculty.
Demonstrated ability to develop and complete long-range strategic goals and priorities, with excellent planning and organizational skills, as well as problem-solving.
Demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to collaboration, with the ability to influence and motivate constituencies.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional partnerships.
Ability to be proactive, take ownership of assigned responsibilities, work with little supervision, and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.
Ability to train and supervise support staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams in a complex organization.
Superior interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
