Bovard Scholars Admissions Coach (Resource Employee)

USC Bovard Scholars is seeking motivated and driven leaders to serve as Admissions Coaches.  Candidates should have experience supporting diverse and economically disadvantaged students within an academic environment. The ideal candidates will have experience assisting high school students with the college application process, strong writing and public speaking skills, a capacity for engaging students in the classroom, and a passion for expanding student access and academic opportunity. Resumes should demonstrate volunteer, work or personal experience with students from low-income families. This is a nationwide search. Applicants not local to Southern California will be provided housing during the three-week summer program plus one week of in-person training.  

The program aims to help high-achieving high school students with financial need gain admission to and succeed at the nation’s top universities.  Scholars will receive admission and financial aid guidance, personalized career exploration opportunities, comprehensive test preparation, and leadership development.  Many of our students will be the first in their families to attend college.  The program includes an intensive, three-week residential experience during the summer (July 12, 2020 – August 1, 2020) on USC’s campus at no cost to the students.

Admissions Coaches will each be responsible for delivering the program curriculum to a group of 12 students during the three-week summer session. Additionally, they will work individually with each student to help identify best-fit colleges, review college application essays, discuss career interests, teach college knowledge, and provide support and encouragement throughout the college application process.  Coaches will begin a week prior to the program start date for training and have the opportunity to support students through the entire application process. 

Time Commitment:

On Campus: 4 weeks, 40 hours per week, in-person, July 6  – August 1, 2020

Remote Training/Self-Study: 3-5 hours per week for 3 weeks in Spring, prior to on-campus program start

Remote Support: Ongoing support throughout the students’ senior year of high school (September 2020 – May 2021) to help with the college and financial aid applications and the decision-making process.  An average of 10-15 hours per month via phone, text, email, and video conferencing.

Compensation:

$30 per hour


Qualifications Bachelor’s degree • Demonstrated ability to provide personalized and strategic college admissions counseling to high achieving students with financial need • Deep knowledge of top-tier and highly competitive public, private and liberal arts schools across the country; includes first-hand knowledge of the campus, school culture, program strengths, student resources and application process • Experience teaching students in the classroom, in addition to working one on one; natural ability to mentor and advise • Demonstrated organization skills, attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team • Superior writing and communication skills • Ability to understand the unique social-emotional needs of individual students • Demonstrated cultural awareness and competency • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and perform well under pressure Preferred Qualifications • Minimum 8-10 years high school college counseling experience • Prior experience as an admissions officer of a college or university
