The Marshall Undergraduate Career Services (MUCS) Office provides co-curricular programming for students in the areas of career advisement and professional and leadership development. The office serves an undergraduate population of approximately 4000 business majors and 1000 business minors and is a resource for both students and employers, The office also provides a range of programs and services such as advisement, career exploration, and interview and recruitment preparation with a focus on domestic and international internships and full time job opportunities across a variety of functions and industries.

The Career Center Manager manages a team of Career Advisors as well as relationships with/between multiple constituencies (employers, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administration) in a mutually beneficial career advisement and educational capacity.  The incumbent will facilitate partnerships with businesses and organizations in Southern California and beyond to enable a variety of career exploration activities such as shadow opportunities, internships, professional mentoring, and student organization outreach. This role will liaise with the USC Career Center, other campus career centers (Marshall MBA Career Resource Center, Annenberg School for Communication and Viterbi School of Engineering), as well as the international USC offices.  The incumbent will oversee large scale recruiting events and career treks and will report to the Vice Dean for Undergraduate Programs.

This position will lead an office that has had a transformational effect on our undergraduate population. Key job accountabilities include:

  • Manage Marshall Undergraduate Career Services (MUCS).  Set goals, objectives and priorities for MUCS.  Develop strategy, processes and programs to achieve goals and objectives.  Deliver a suite of services to promote career planning, facilitate job search, and attain internships and employment for students. Measure effectiveness and quality of operations and services.
  • Manage and support MUCS staff in the development and delivery of programs and services.
  • Advise the Vice Dean in matters regarding specific career services and general student services.
  • Partner with other Marshall undergraduate program staff to deliver integrated student services throughout the student lifecycle from prospective student to enrolled student to alum.
  • Oversee and participate in the advisement of students in career issues and strategies, internship search methods, resume' preparation and related matters. Determine career counseling needs of individual students as well as groups of students and develop action plans accordingly.
  • Establish and cultivate contacts with corporate recruiters to develop internship and full time job opportunities in California, the US and internationally.
  • Attend receptions and professional meetings to stay current on career and employment trends and ensure the University maintains a presence in the recruitment community.
  • Oversee, manage and expand relationships with existing corporate recruiters and other company representatives. Generate new leads/relationships within targeted industries and functions for off campus recruiting while performing outreach for current students.
  • Identify opportunities to network alumni in order to augment career development and recruitment, enhance alumni participation and broaden the employer base for the school.
  • Oversee and participate in the planning and delivery of student workshops and seminars covering pertinent topics such as career planning, placement process, interview techniques and resume' preparation, providing relevant programs for a range of students from first-year students and students who are early in their career exploration process through senior students.
  • Oversee and participate in the planning and execution of large scale recruiting events, including fall and spring recruiter receptions and spring career conference.
  • Personally host on-campus recruiters, companies, organizations and firms for debriefing meetings to strengthen our relationships with those recruiters and their companies/organizations/firms.
  • Work with the Marshall Institutional Research team to manage the design, distribution, compilation, and presentation of graduating senior placement survey data for internal use and external data sharing.
  • Collaborate with Marshall student organizations regarding employer contacts that would benefit members. 
  • Manage a variety of student/ employer assessments to determine program effectiveness.
  • Maintain awareness of hiring trends and use the information to improve the effectiveness of the Marshall Student Services Office.
  • Oversee the acquisition and use of information systems for managing records and data.  Determine and adopt best practices in using data to provide personalized services, tailor offerings, and maximize program and services effectiveness.
  • Ensure MUCS activities are coordinated with other campus and school offices to enhance the efficiency and quality of services via integration and complementarity.

Other duties for this position include:

  • Participate in operations and programming for Marshall Undergraduate Admissions and Advising Offices (i.e., orientation, Marshall Connections Program events, scholarship interviews and conversion activities).
  • Serve as an advisor to career-oriented student groups and organizations. planning student organization events.  Follow up with contacts from these events to facilitate partnerships.
  • Partner with External and Corporate Relations Office to enhance and leverage corporate and alumni relations in mutually beneficial ways.
  • Secure contacts from Marshall international programs such as GLP, LINC, and EXCEL trips, creating an aggregated list of overseas contacts, and managing subsequent follow up to these contacts.
  • Oversee and participate in the preparation and updating of newsletters, handbooks, guides and brochures.  Oversee the management of social and electronic media outlets (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Marshall website and other media).
  • Manage and plan the Career Services operation budget. Gather and analyze financial data. Monitor expenses and authorize expenditures.

Preferred qualifications are as follows:

  • Doctorate Degree.
  • Seven years of work experience in corporate setting or educational institution.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Genuine interest in working with undergraduate students.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing priorities and fluctuating workloads.

Minimum Education: Master's degree

Minimum Experience: 5 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Professional placement experience in industry or education providing a thorough knowledge of the field
