Chemical Lab Safety Specialist I

Chemical Hygiene Los Angeles, California

USC has a great opportunity for a Chemical Lab Safety Specialist to join our Environmental Health & Safety Division (EH&S).  EH&S is responsible for providing a safe and environmentally sound work and learning environment for our students, employees, and surrounding communities.  To support the academic, research, and administrative activities of the university, we control liability by anticipating risk, and evaluating and continuously developing new safety procedures and programs.  Under the supervision of the Chemical Safety Officer, the Chemical Lab Safety Specialist will assist with the implementation of the university lab safety program and the chemical hygiene plan.  This role will also provide technical guidance for complex scientific procedures with hazardous materials.Additional job responsibilities include:

  • Develop written materials detailing chemical hazards, incompatibilities, and health effects, and train research personnel on related topics
  • Assist PIs and lab researchers in the development of lab specific SOPs as they relate to standard lab operations and experimental procedures
  • Will work with labs to identify needs and gaps and to implement programs that will address those needs. This includes remediation of high-hazard labs containing large and complex chemical inventory, and providing training, tailored to specific PI's needs
  • Will perform safety inspections, including annual lab inspections, safety inspections of high-hazard chemical inventories; unannounced personnel protective equipment (PPE) inspections; short notice inspections of laboratories of concern, and other inspections as required. Documents results and recommends corrective action where non-compliance is found.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of safety programs to meet University and regulatory requirements. Establishes documents and communicates standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Provide technically-sound advice and recommendations to PIs, lab personnel, and students to ensure maximum safety and regulatory compliance
  • Will develop and conduct safety training
  • Prepare fact sheets and other authoritative informational materials on safety and regulatory topics
  • Investigate and document chemical and laboratory related accidents and incidents; formulation of appropriate safety recommendations/requirements in response to findings.

Will perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Preferred education:

Master's Degree or PhD in Chemistry

Preferred experience:

3+ years of research lab experience, preferably in a chemical related subject
