The Position:

The University of Southern California (USC) is seeking a Chief of Staff to support the Office of the President. Reporting directly to the President, the Chief of Staff will be responsible for the overall planning and management of the Office of the President, providing support to the President to carry out the mission of the University.

The Chief of Staff interacts closely with a variety of on- and off-campus individuals and organizations including students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry, elected officials, and vendors. Core responsibilities of this position include:

  • Provide leadership, planning, coordination, production, fiscal management, event management, risk compliance, and evaluation for events, programs and activities sponsored by the University of Southern California.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability.
  • Thinks strategically, making complex decisions in an extremely fast paced and sensitive environment.
  • Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Extensive experience as a leader within a large and complex academic institution, planning and executing a wide range of complex and sensitive executive and administrative duties related to policy development, academic, fiscal and administrative programs.
  • Serves as the chief communication liaison to trustees and senior administrators on behalf of the President as needed. Represents the President to University and public constituents.
  • Supervises subordinate staff and has responsibility for managing, planning, coordinating and implementing programs, projects, events and activities for the administrative operations of the President’s office.
  • Maintains budgets for the Office of the President.
  • Manages calendar for the President. Schedules President’s agenda, travel, itineraries and discusses these events with President on a daily basis. Insures that the President is briefed and properly advised on all matters. Conducts staff meetings, planning calendar meetings and writer’s meetings.
  • Unquestionable personal code of ethics, integrity and trust.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of directly related professional experience, preferably in higher education, government, or other complex organizations with responsibilities requiring discretion, sound judgement, management, and policy-making
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Proven collaborator and consensus builder that has a track record of successfully partnering with diverse constituencies
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, with high tolerance for ambiguity and complexity
