Data Graphics Specialist

The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics at the University of Southern California is seeking a Data Graphics Specialist to join the Center’s Communication team.

At the Schaeffer Center, we shape and effectively communicate evidence-based solutions that measurably improve lives and drive innovation in healthcare. The Schaeffer Center’s communications department strategically engages with media, public and private sector stakeholder communities to strategically disseminate the Center research.

The Data Graphics Specialist will translate research and findings into engaging graphic content for multiple audiences. This Specialist will work with research teams to translate studies into compelling data visualizations and graphic stories. This Specialist will be an integral part of the communications team and work on updating the Schaeffer Center’s website, developing content and editing copy, and working with the team on dissemination strategies (social media, press releases, etc). This position requires being able to take a creative approach to communicating research findings with an emphasis on policy relevance. This position requires an ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate and communicate with others. Ideal candidates should have an understanding of health policy research, love working with data, and have an eye for detail. This position will be an integral part of Center’s communications team and will collaborate in the development of an overall strategy and editorial calendar, as well as tracking and analyzing metrics. This full-time position offers growth potential for the ideal candidate.

Job Duties:

  • Collaborate with research teams to develop compelling and engaging data stories and visuals that effectively translate research and communicate information. Products may include simple graphs and charts, infographics and complex interactive data visualizations.   

  • Work with the communications team to publish content and maintain the Schaeffer Center’s WordPress website.

  • Work with the communications team on content creation, including editing copy, maintaining brand guidelines, uploading and embedding graphics, and editing HTML code to address display issues.  

  • Develop relevant metrics and stories of impact that resulted from successfully disseminating Center research.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Education:

Master's Degree

Minimum Experience:

2 years progressive experience translating healthcare research and health policy into engaging visual content for multiple audiences/platforms

Preferred Experience:

4 Years [Combined experience/education as substitute for experience.]

Minimum Fields of Expertise:

  • Excellent visual, editorial, organization and project management skills

  • Experience creating online charts and graphics, including data visualizations and infographics

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop

  • Experience using Datawrapper, Tableau and/or other interactive data visualization programs

  • Excellent written and oral communications

  • Experience with AP-style writing and editing

  • Understanding of health policy or healthcare research

  • Experience with web content management systems, including WordPress

  • Experience with HTML code

Preferred Expertise:

Expertise in translating data into engaging, user-friendly content

Expertise in digital communications, including graphics, data visualizations, infographics, basic animations
Experience with health policy or related fields

Compensation

Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Position is 100% FTE on a 2-year (renewable) fixed term.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Understanding of design issues, including browser usability and cross-platform compatibility. Solid foundation in studio design, typography, printing and layout. Work experience as a visual/graphic designer covering all aspects of artwork preparation, printing, and website creation. Requires thorough knowledge of typography, printing processes, selection of paper or other printing surfaces, and paper folding, binding and finishing. Knowledge of desktop publishing systems and specialized equipment related to periodical production.
