The Office

The Business Administrative Office supports various Senior Vice Presidents within USC, including the SVP of Administration, SVP of Human Resources, SVP of General Counsel, and SVP of Finance.  The Business Office works with multiple central units, including the Office of Budget and Planning, (OBP) Treasury, and the Comptroller’s office to ensure all budgetary and financial needs can address the growing needs of the University. This position will support the Office of the Senior Vice President of Administration, Shared Services Administration, and Safety areas, which include the Department of Public Safety (DPS), Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) , and Fire Safety & Emergency Planning FSEP, and the Office of Sustainability.    

The Position

The Office of the Senior Vice President for Administration is seeking an experienced Department Business Manager to administer the business operations of a large administrative department. The Department Business Manager will manage various financial and accounting operations, including development and administration of budgets and financial reporting. The Department Business Manager will conduct monthly reporting, proformas and will create benchmarks and rosters that allow the team to organize financial projections to ensure funding is being secured for all current and future needs. The Department Business Manager will also directly supervise administrative staff, student workers, volunteers and interns. This person will be responsible for the hiring, training and supervision of their subordinate staff, providing counseling and feedback as needed.

Key Accountabilities Include:

  • Manage the accounting and financial operations on the business unit, including processing daily transactions, preparing financial reports for internal and external distribution, and developing and maintaining information systems to support financial operations.

  • Plans and develops short and long-term budgets. Provides projections and forecasts and analyzes financial impacts.

  • Hires, trains and directly supervises subordinate staff. Assigns work to staff and assesses performance. Administers personnel and payroll functions for the department.

  • Assists in strategic planning activities. Administers use of facilities, equipment and space, including the purchase of new equipment and the maintenance of existing equipment and facilities.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.  The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Accounting and/or Business Economics
  • 5 years of directly related experience
  • Knowledge of University financial policies, procedures and systems and use of computerized spreadsheets and databases

Minimum Education - Bachelor's degree - Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience - 3 years of directly related experience - Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience - Experience in business administration, accounting and budget experience including knowledge of government and fund accounting - Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices
