Director of Advancement & Parent Giving

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music invites applicants for a Director within the Office of Advancement.  The position is full-time reports to the Associate Dean for Advancement.

Combining the benefits of a world-class conservatory and a leading research university, the USC Thornton School of Music offers students the opportunity to pursue a thorough music education in a real-world context. The new educational model, launching in Fall 2019 for undergraduates in the Classical Performance & Composition Division, renews Thornton’s commitment to a virtuosic education and asks students to reimagine what it means to be a classical musician in the 21st century. Thornton offers students a full range of musical disciplines across a demanding innovative curriculum, and the opportunity to work with a faculty of national and international renown.

To that end, we are seeking to create as diverse a pool of candidates as possible; one which reflects the broad diversity of identities and experiences that comprise the country as well as Thornton generally.

Duties:

  • Manages portfolio of approximately 125 prospects according to University Advancement guidelines to solicit major gifts of $25,000 and above, developing individualized strategies for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Identifies select concerts, recitals, master classes and special events to attend with donors and prospects. Follows up after events with individuals as appropriate.
  • Develops, manages and executes a robust Parent Giving engagement and communications program.
  • Identifies appropriate events for parent donor prospects throughout the year.
  • Makes recommendations to Associate Dean for Advancement for guest lists for Presidential and Dean’s events, football parties, USC Advancement prospect events and USC Advancement music events.
  • Contributes content and reviews briefings in collaboration with Advancement Coordinator and Central Advancement Prospect Researcher.
  • Attends USC Thornton Board of Councilors meetings and produce meeting minutes.
  • Serves on the Advancement Parents Program Council (managed by USC Central Advancement)
  • Communicates the School’s goals, objectives and activities with University, alumni, volunteer and donor constituents.

Qualifications

The idea candidate will have demonstrated success in Major Gifts, Parent Giving and Stewardship while working within a collaborative fundraising environment.  The candidate will possess exemplary communications skills and have a record of accomplishment with advanced organizational knowledge as well as the ability to cultivate and maintain a broad spectrum of relationships.
