The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics is one of the nation’s premier health policy research centers.  Housed jointly in the schools of Pharmacy and Public Policy, its mission is to measurably improve value in health through evidence based policy solutions, research excellence, and private and public sector engagement. The Center is comprised of approximately 100 faculty and staff who collaborate on a wide array of research and policy questions.  The Center’s external affairs group is divided into two distinct but closely coordinated domains that work together to support a coherent strategy involving communications, conferences and events, and development. Together, the Center's external affairs group ensures Schaeffer Center research reaches target audiences, informs health policy, and garners enduring support for the Center.

The Director of Events and Development develops and executes a partnership and advancement strategy and oversees the Center's extensive slate of health policy conferences targeting policymakers, media, peers and the public. This position works closely with colleagues at partner organizations to develop distinct events held in Washington DC, Los Angeles, and elsewhere; interfaces and works closely with the Schaeffer Center Advisory Board, to ensure members' ongoing engagement; and develops and maintains other strategic partnerships and advancement relationships. This is a full-time, 2-year (renewable) fixed term position. 

Position Description

The Director of Events and Development is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for outreach and partnerships that leverages the Center’s research as a foundation for health policy conferences, relationships, and fundraising that furthers the Center’s mission.  The Center utilizes public convenings to showcase research findings to policymakers, agency heads, private sector leaders, media, and peer institutions. The Director of Events and Development works closely with the Center’s communications team, designated university advancement team, and the Center's leadership.

Duties include:

  • Establishing a strategy to support the Center mission and vision by leveraging the Center’s research as a foundation for health policy conferences, strategic partnerships, and advancement.

  • Performing near-term and long-term business planning for the conferencing, strategic partnership and advancement enterprise of the Center, including metrics goals, and execution of the plan.

  • Developing an annual calendar of health policy conferences, establishing program agendas, curating themes and speakers, leveraging Schaeffer Center research, overseeing logistics, and ensuring program success.

  • Managing and overseeing fund stewardship by working with Schaeffer Center leadership and development staff to maintain donor relationships and produce reports.

  • Cultivating and maintaining strategic relationships with key individuals and organizations to promote Center support.

  • Engaging with Center Advisory Board to identify important policy topics, develop programming and outreach around them.

  • Developing and maintaining contacts with University officials, community leaders, foundations, and professional colleagues.

  • Working closely with the Director of Communications to design and implement a coherent strategy for marketing events.

  • Interfacing as the primary contact with strategic partners, including those based at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

  • Working collaboratively with Center management, Office of Research Advancement, University Advancement and other resources to identify and pursue fundraising opportunities.

  • Overseeing the collection and evaluation of metrics that reflect the success of Center conferences and advancement activities.

  • Working collaboratively with Center Director and Managing Director to contribute to the Center’s strategic planning process and plan implementation.

  • Managing and developing an Events and Development Specialist and student worker(s).

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Master’s degree

  • Minimum Experience: 10 years

  • Minimum Fields of Expertise: Management and programmatic experience in conference development and execution, partnership/business development, health policy

  • Conference, strategic partnership, and advancement management experience within university setting preferred

Compensation

Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
