Director of Development, Office of Parent Giving and Engagement

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. USC's University Advancement division is seeking a Director of Development, Office of Parent Giving and Engagement. The Director will provide strategic vision for and day to day management of USC’s Parent Leadership Circle – a university wide recognition program established to engage and recognize current parents giving at leadership level. The  Director is responsible for management of a large portfolio of parent prospects who are capable of making major gifts, with a special focus on current parents of USC undergraduates. The Director will develop an extensive knowledge of USC and its many programs and projects in order to match them with potential parent donor interests. He/she will develop and implement strategies designed to engage the top parent prospects and move these prospects progressively toward gift goals that are aligned both to the prospects' capacity and interests.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Manage of a pool of 125+ active parent prospects with the capacity to make gifts in the $100K+ range, including assessment, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop strategies for parent engagement and collaborate with colleagues across the university to implement cultivation and solicitation plans.
  • Work independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional priorities and develop funding proposals and negotiate and structure complex gifts.
  • Possess ability to engage in strategic planning and implementation of programs/initiatives to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward parent major gift prospects. Support schools and units in these activities.
  • Plan and run/oversee university-wide staff meeting of USC fundraising staff who are focused on soliciting parents on a regular periodic basis.
  • Create programming relevant to parents during University events, including Orientation, Parents' Weekend, and Commencement, as well as athletic, artistic, and other events.
  • Staff the Trojan Parents Leadership Circle as a means of engaging top parent donors/prospects acting as peer to peer fundraising volunteers and advising on program strategy and event planning/hosting.
  • Work with institutional partners to improve prospect relationships with the University through enhanced parent-related web page(s) and other forms of communications, with special emphasis on messaging to parents about giving.
  • Travel regularly for meetings and events, including some travel with deans and/or senior university administrators.
  • Attend campus activities such as athletic events, arts performances, lectures, and symposia to foster strong relationships with parents and students that result in philanthropic contributions; serve as a resource, advocate, and spokesperson for development programs at         USC.
  • Monitor and report on parent fundraising progress, including prospect tracking and funds raised relative to campaign goals.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in Office of Annual Giving to help identify Parents Fund donors who are good major gift prospects, and to ensure consistency of messaging.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education:    

Master's degree

Preferred Experience

  • 7+ years related work experience, including major/leadership gifts or other direct fundraising experience;
  • experience with school/college/university-based parent fundraising programs;
  • able to build strong relationships with prospects, donors, volunteers, as well as faculty, staff, and administrators;
  • able to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality, be able to work effectively in high-tension situations and maintain composure under pressure, and have the capacity to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines;
  • able to travel extensively and attend University functions during and after normal business hours
  • desktop applications;
  • relational databases, including managing and tracking prospects;
  • exceptional written and verbal communication skills and possess strong interpersonal skills including the ability to listen carefully and respectfully and to speak with diplomacy and tact.
