The University of Southern California Spatial Sciences Institute, located in Los Angeles, California, invites applicants for one or more full-time research-track faculty positions in the ranks of assistant professor (research), associate professor (research), and professor (research) for the 2018-2019 academic year.
The Institute, housed in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, provides world-class training for scores of working professionals, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students. Today, it offers a Ph.D. in Population, Health and Place, a Graduate Certificate in Spatial Analytics, an M.S. and three Graduate Certificates in Geographic Information Science and Technology, an M.S in Spatial Informatics, a B.S. in GeoDesign, a Minor in Spatial Studies, a Minor in Human Security and Geospatial Intelligence and several General Education courses.
The USC Spatial research enterprise is organized around a series of virtual laboratories led by the research-active faculty. These USC Spatial labs utilize GIS-based spatial analysis and modeling techniques to simulate social and environmental processes and their impacts for human well-being. The work of all Spatial Science Institute faculty labs is collaborative and cross-disciplinary, engaging faculty and students from a variety of scientific domains and perspectives, demonstrating the role of spatial sciences in advancing knowledge and understanding as an enabling science.
The successful candidate will have substantive expertise and demonstrated excellence in research in the Institute’s core areas of geographic information science and the accompanying technologies. The candidate may have an opportunity to teach one or more courses in one or more of the following areas: mathematical techniques in GIS; hydrologic and sustainability science applications of GIS; maps and spatial reasoning; principles of geographic information science; spatial computing; concepts for spatial thinking; spatial databases; spatial data acquisition; spatial analysis; spatial modeling; geospatial technology project management; GIS programming and customization; remote sensing for GIS; cartography and visualization; web GIS; mobile GIS; geospatial data integration; and geospatial intelligence tradecraft.
