Hazardous Waste Specialist

Environmental Health and Safety - UPC Los Angeles, California

USC's Division of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is seeking a Hazardous WasteSpecialist to join its team. The Hazardous Waste Specialist will perform a variety of technical, educational, administrative tasks, and oversee the activities and operations related to the Hazardous Waste program area within the Waste Division of EH&S. This position coordinates assigned activities with internal and external agencies, provides technical assistance to the Division Manager, and represents the division/department in meetings.

This position assists in directing the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the hazardous waste program area and has a key role in supporting divisional and departmental efforts to improve the safety culture of the university.

Additional job accountabilities include:

  • Develop and implement safety program to meet University and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a resource for compliance questions/answers; communicates regulatory and internal policy; provide operational application guidance to the university community ; support the response to environmental compliance issues.
  • Provide written documents of audit results and corrective action plans. Interact with hazardous waste generating personnel regarding compliance and packing discrepancies.
  • Provide technical support to identified HIGH HAZARD laboratories, with assistance in the installation of toxic and pyrophoric gases and response protocols. Support 6 Haz Mat Waste Techs; coordinate weekly tasks.
  • Assess existing programs for adequacy and regulatory compliance and recommends enhancements or modifications, as required.
  • Maintain program-specific statistical records and administrative paperwork. Prepares reports as requested or required.
  • Conducts field audits for compliance to program regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Combined experience/education as a substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience:

  • Three years’ experience
  • Combined experience/education as a substitute for minimum experience

Minimum Field of Expertise:

  • Science education/Directly related experience

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree

Preferred Field of Expertise:

  • Additional experience in lieu of a Master's degree
