Instructional Lab Tech, Senior

Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California (USC) is a private and not-for-profit research university founded in 1880, and one of the largest private employer in the Los Angeles area with over 40,000 students.

The Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the Viterbi School of Engineering, offers BS, MS and PhD degrees within the areas of Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Petroleum. We have a total of 156 undergraduates and over 350 graduate students, 27 faculty members and 14 staff members.  As the undergraduate population is expected to keep growing, we are seeking an Instructional Laboratory Technician, Senior, to join our two laboratory staff members.

The new staff member will provide laboratory technical services and support to students and faculty of instructional labs, prepare and maintain laboratory facilities, equipment and materials for experiments and ensure compliance with health and safety standards as required. This Instructional Lab Tech, Senior will report directly to the Instructional Lab Manager.


  • Provides advanced or specialized laboratory technical services and support to faculty and students of instructional labs. Tests and conducts experiments, exercises and demonstrations. Provides technical assistance regarding pre and post experiment preparations and processes.
  • Constructs, adapts or acquires specialized lab equipment to meet specific instruction needs. Troubleshoots, operates, repairs and maintains equipment and instrumentation. Instructs and supervises staff, students and lecturers in use of specialized equipment.
  • Prepares detailed reports of laboratory preparation and activities as requested.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety standards of laboratory operations.
  • Controls and monitors supply inventories. Approves supply orders and negotiates directly with vendors as appropriate. Oversees the maintenance, cataloging and inventory control of slides and other teaching materials used by faculty and students.
  • Maintains research facility in orderly, operable condition. Maintains security and safety of equipment, instrumentation and supplies. Prepares and labels materials and waste for storage and disposes as needed.
  • Conducts library research to assist in the planning and design of experiments.
  • Completes and controls the annual chemical and equipment inventory.
  • All tasks related to instructional labs have priority over any other tasks referred in the cross-campus job description.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.

This is a full-time position. Work hours will be arranged based on the lab schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:

Good communication skills and ability to multi task and work in a team

Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Power Point

Knowledge on the use of equipment/instrumentation in a lab setting

Strong knowledge of lab protocols and safety guidelines

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience in area of instruction providing strong knowledge of lab protocols and safety guidelines and computerized analysis methods. Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and schedule activities to meet both short-term and long-term deadlines. Knowledge of database operations and data acquisition.
