International Student Advisor - Office of International Services - FIXED TERM

PLEASE NOTE: This position is a Fixed Term role with an end date of June 30, 2018.

The Office of International Services (OIS) supports international students and scholars as they strive to achieve their educational, professional, and personal objectives. The OIS is a resource center that provides advising, information, and opportunities for involvement to help members of the USC international community make the most of their USC experience. Recognizing the many benefits of international educational exchange, OIS advocates for these benefits on campus, locally and nationally.

Currently we are seeking applications for the position of International Student Advisor to work with our F-1 student population specifically on post-completion work authorization.  Candidates should have previous DSO (Designated School Official) experience in the area of OPT, STEM OPT and Cap-Gap Extensions and prior work in the field of international education. Strong verbal and written communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a desire to develop new programs and services is required.

Summary of Major Responsibilities:

Oversee all employment applications for post-completion OPT to include STEM OPT and Cap-Gap Extensions.

  • Review and approve of all visa documents and Form I-983s at the application submission stage, the 12-month and 24-month stage, and during any changes to employment.
  • Maintain student records in SEVIS system during the 36-month period post-graduation and providing documentation for immigration status, travel and visas post-graduation.
  • Liaise with SEVIS Helpdesk and the USCIS Service Centers when there are issues with an individual’s immigration or employment record.
  • Assist with processing immigration documents for program extensions, changes of status, transfers and a variety of other documents required to help students maintain F-1 status.
  • Reports data in SEVIS and Ellucian/ISSM.
  • Provides training and guidance to campus partners on immigration regulations, international student advisement, employment, and intercultural education concerns.
  • Develops workshops/presentations for staff, faculty, and new/continuing international students.
  • Provides training to student workers who assist staff in processing immigration documents and will help streamline processes for efficiency when needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Previous DSO experience.
  • Two or more years of experience advising F-1 students specifically on post-completion work authorization and maintaining status.
  • Experience with immigration compliance and data reporting in SEVIS.

Minimum Education:
- Bachelor's degree
- Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience:
- 1 year

Minimum Field of Expertise:
- Knowledge of federal immigration and other regulations pertaining to international students and scholars.
- Demonstrated English writing skills and computer literacy.
