Lecturer-Director of Debate and Forensics

School of Communication Faculty Los Angeles, California

The USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism seeks a full-time faculty lecturer to serve as the Director of Debate and Forensics of the Trojan Debate Squad (TDS). The position will serve as the Director by providing the primary leadership and management of the TDS in all of its programs including the intercollegiate policy debate squad (NDT/CEDA), British Parliamentary debate club, partnership with the LA Metro Debate League (LAMDL) and on-campus public debating.

Leadership of the debate program will involve a series of responsibilities including teaching and coaching of student competitors, mentorship of graduate students, managing travel logistics, overseeing the squad’s travel budget, coordinating student recruitment, supervising the squad’s scholarship program, hosting campus debate competitions, and supporting alumni engagement.

The Director of Debate and Forensics will share these responsibilities with and supervise the Associate Director of Debate and graduate student assistants.

As a lecturer in the School of Communication, the Director of Debate and Forensics will serve as a faculty member and will teach one class per semester, typically Argumentation or Public Speaking. Lecturers are designated part of the Research, Teaching, Professional Practice, and Clinical faculty (RTPC) positions which are eligible for renewals and promotions, but are not tenure-track appointments. The position will report to the Director of the School of Communication or other supervisors as designated.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear history of involvement with, and robust understanding of intercollegiate debate. The successful candidate will also provide evidence of their vision for, and expertise with, recruiting and teaching a diverse student cohort. The successful candidate will possess the coaching, administrative, supervisory, and budgetary skills expected of a leader of a preeminent debate and forensics program.

The USC Annenberg Trojan Debate Squad enjoys a rich and distinguished history. The Debate Society was chartered in 1880 as the first student organization recognized on campus. Over the years USC has qualified for the National Debate Tournament (NDT) in more years than any other university and has qualified every year since 1963. Today, supported by the Annenberg School, the Squad’s wide array of programming provides opportunities for the next Director to help influence the next generational of academic debate programs.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

USC is an equal-opportunity educator and employer, proudly pluralistic and firmly committed to providing equal opportunity for outstanding persons of every race, gender, creed and background. The University particularly encourages members of underrepresented groups, veterans and individuals with disabilities to apply.
