Managing Editor, Special Sections

Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California, Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is seeking a high energy, innovative enterprising professional with superb communication and project management skills to manage the publication process for the International Journal of Communication submissions for Special Sections.

The USC Annenberg Press is committed to excellence in communication scholarship, journalism, media research, and application. To advance this goal, we edit and publish prominent scholarly publications that are both innovative and influential, and that chart new courses in their respective fields of study. The Annenberg Press is among the first to deliver journal content online free of charge, and is devoted to the wide dissemination of its content. The USC Annenberg Press continues to offer scholars and readers a forum that meets the highest standards of peer review and engages established and emerging scholars from anywhere in the world.

Job Accountabilities:

  • The Managing Editor, Special Sections manages the publication process for the International Journal of Communication submissions for Special Sections.
  • Manages incoming journal submissions for Special Sections and is responsible for ensuring that the double-blind refereeing process is carried out from an article’s initial submission to its final publication.
  • Collaborates with the editor-in-chief to determine journal content and topics of special issues.
  • Determines funding support efforts in conjunction with special topic issues and works with international scholars in the development of a two-year plan for each special section.  Negotiates special agreements with guest editors of special sections.
  • Pre-copyedits accepted Special Section articles and works with authors to bring to APA-compliance, also recommends enhancements to articles for optimum readership.
  • Manages the design, art direction, page layout, APA-6 compliance, and graphics for each published paper.
  • Manages the process of preparing promotional announcements to post to the USC Annenberg Press website following the publication of all Special Sections.
  • Lead and manage a team of research assistants in vetting new submissions.
  • Manages book review submissions and distributes Calls for Book Reviews on a quarterly basis.

Minimum Education/Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism or communication. Project management with experience in publishing and/or editing.
  • Experience in publications production and formatting.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Two-years’ project management experience, preferably as a managing editor for an academic journal. Experience with writing, editing, proofreading, and the preparation of materials for publication. APA 6th & 7th knowledge required. Working knowledge of desktop publishing, word processing, graphics, design, and printing.
  • BA degree, PhD or communications academic background preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic background in a communication-related field.
  • Strategic marketing experience.
  • Solid leadership and managerial experience in a dynamic, fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Highly innovative, collaborative, and entrepreneurial.
  • Visionary thinker and strategic planner who is a master at execution.

  • This is a gift-funded, part-time (50%) staff position.
