Part-Time Lecturer of Information Technology

The Information Technology Program (http://itp.usc.edu) in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering (htto://viterbi.usc.edu) seeks outstanding candidates for part-time, teaching track (non-tenure) faculty positions to teach undergraduate courses in the field of Information Technology.


We are seeking candidates who are committed to excellence in teaching and willing to contribute to engagement with and inclusion of students from a wide range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and welcomes applications from women, underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. The Viterbi school was recently awarded the ASEE President's Award for its continuing efforts to "change the conversation" about engineering and to develop nationally a robust and diverse engineering pipeline.

Applications must include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, and names of at least three professional and/or teaching references as well as a statement about fostering an inclusive environment in the classroom. Applications will be considered starting immediately until the positions are filled. Early applications are highly encouraged. Applications received after May 15, 2019 may not be considered. The positions are for appointment in the Fall 2019 semester, starting August 16, 2019.

The Information Technology Program (ITP) is an academic unit in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Its 17 full-time and 25+ part-time teaching faculty have built a collaborative community of faculty who are passionate about teaching and working with students. ITP provides engineering education to thousands of students from many majors, helping to guide students towards technical interests and career paths. The program offers courses in areas including programming, web and mobile development, video game design and programming, digital security and forensics, 3D computer graphics, analytics, enterprise information systems and digital entrepreneurship. Its award-winning faculty also work on initiatives such as increasing diversity in engineering, outreach to underserved communities, accessibility in technology, and technology for social impact.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is among the top tier engineering schools in the world, with research expenditures typically exceeding $185 million annually. It is home to institutions such as the Information Sciences Institute, two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers, and the Department of Homeland Security’s first University Center of Excellence, CREATE. The school is also affiliated with the Institute for Creative Technologies and the USC Stevens Center for Innovation.

The job openings are for teaching one or more of the following classes:

  • ITP 104 - Web Publishing: Building websites from ground up using HTML and CSS. Introduction to CSS Frameworks and JavaScript.
  • ITP 115 - Programming in Python: Introduction to programming and computational thinking using Python. This course targets non-CS and non-engineering majors and focuses on the practical application of programming concepts.
  • ITP 125 - From Hackers to CEOs: An Introduction to Information Security. Introductory course in computer security. Fundamentals of information security management. Threats to information integrity. Ethical hacking concerns and practice. Policies and Procedures.
  • ITP 168 - Introduction to MATLAB: Fundamentals of MATLAB: a high-performance numeric computation and visualization environment. Overview of linear algebra and matrix manipulation; using 2-D and 3-D plotting routines; programming in MATLAB; basic numerical analysis.
  • ITP 425 - Web Application Security: Web application security techniques. eCommerce vulnerabilities. Online fraud. Solutions to spam and identity theft.
  • ITP 491 - Level Design and Development for Video Games: Theories and practices of defining, prototyping, testing, and refining a video game level, development of game level documents, and the tools for managing the development process.

Minimum Education
Master's degree or equivalent in a STEM-related or industry-related field
Preferred Education
Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in a STEM-related or industry-related field
Minimum Experience
Two years of relevant industry and/or teaching experience
Preferred Experience
Five years of industry and/or teaching experience in relevant field

Additional Course Specific Requirements

ITP 104:
Minimum Experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in client-side web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Experience with CSS Frameworks.
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in STEM-related or industry-related field.

ITP 115:
Minimum Experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming

ITP 125:
Minimum Experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in a cybersecurity domain, including networking, penetration testing, vulnerability and risk assessment, digital forensics, incident response or information security operations

ITP 168:
Minimum Experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming

ITP 425:
Minimum Experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in web application security, including the standards set by OWASP or other leading organizations

ITP 491:
Minimum Experience

  • Industry experience, minimum 2 years
  • Listed in credits of at least one released game
  • Professional level design experience using Unity
