Programmer Analyst III

USC’s Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine is seeking a Programmer Analyst.

Our focus at the Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC is improving cancer outcomes by discovering optimal approaches to personalized therapy. Our vision is that a patient’s own metrics will determine their most effective treatment. They might include molecular tumor markers, the dynamics of intracellular processes, or the behavior of cells across diverse microenvironments. We investigate a broad range of biological systems, including cell culture, mouse models, and patient-derived tissues.

We generate large amounts of imaging data from several different microscopy platforms. These data must be systematically stored and analyzed. The role of the Programmer Analyst III is to support discovery efforts by ensuring that image data are collected efficiently, easily retrieved, and processed uniformly. Additionally, the Programmer Analyst will be involved with the creation of novel image analysis methods. We are seeking a talented, communicative, and energetic software developer with experience in the quantitative analysis of images to fill this position.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Use existing microscopy image processing platforms to analyze experimental data and instruct others in such usage.
  • Develop scripts to build image analysis pipelines from multiple processing platforms.
  • Develop custom image analysis algorithms and software to quantify relevant features from microscopy images of biological systems.
  • Work closely with scientists to understand their goals and provide recommendations for analyses that will meet those goals.
  • Develop image data storage, indexing, and retrieval methods. Enter experimental metadata and ensure its integrity.

Key success factors in the performance of this position include attention to detail, the ability to collaborate across disciplines, and curiosity.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree, Combined work experience and education as equivalent

Minimum Experience: 3 years, Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience

Minimum Field of Expertise: Sound knowledge of programming and documentation procedures, programming methods, program flow charts and operator instructions. Knowledge of one or more appropriate computer languages. Competent to work independently on complex programming activities.

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

Preferred Experience: At least 2 years of experience in the quantitative analysis of image data

Preferred Field of Expertise: High proficiency developing software in C, C++, Java, and/or Python. Knowledge of image processing techniques and software. Experience with Matlab or R preferred. Familiarity with microscopy data and biological experimentation preferred.

Posting Salary Range: $70,179 – $116,958

Percentage of Time: 100%
