USC Psychology Department

The Department of Psychology in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences at the University of Southern California invites applications for a Training Project Assistant position.  For this project, our team will (a) train staff and community workers in Ventura County to carry out a community education program with the goal of reducing the time it takes for people who develop serious mental illness to seek mental health care, and (b) evaluate the program. Personnel will be trained to present a scripted program initially remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually in-person during community meetings held at a wide range of agencies and institutions including, clinics, social service agencies, schools, churches and neighborhood centers. Responsibilities of the position will include setting up meetings between trainers and Ventura County staff, supporting the trainers to deliver and evaluate the program, managing the evaluation database, and eventually learning to carry out the training with the trainers. The position requires a 3-4 day work week, excellent Spanish language and English language skills, a strong background in working in the community, and excellent oral presentation skills. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, and experience working independently while managing multiple tasks. A background in the mental health field and expertise with social media are not requirements but would be most beneficial.

Requirements • Willingness to travel between USC and Ventura County about 3-4 times a month when the pandemic is over and it is deemed safe to return to in-person work. • Access to reliable internet • Availability to work evening hours and weekend hours. • The Project Assistant will share driving responsibilities but will need a vehicle of their own and a valid California driver’s license. Mileage will be reimbursed. • A high level of proficiency in Spanish and English reading, writing, and speaking skills is required. • Strong background in community work. • A bachelor’s degree or several years of experience working in the community. • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish strong working relations with a wide range of professionals, staff, and persons with serious mental illness. • Excellent oral presentation skills.
