Project Assistant

Research Los Angeles, California

The school has an international reputation as a hub of aging research and, with additional strong programs throughout the university, leads the way in defining and advancing the field of gerontology.

The USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology is seeking a Project Assistant to join the team. This is an opportunity for a reliable and self-motivated person to assist with data collection for a project or study and assist with research center or project administrative functions.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Neuroimaging data collection for research studies, management and editing of data from studies involving magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT), as well as neuroimaging data analysis.
  • Actively participate in the preparation and editing of articles, manuscripts, grant proposals, reports, correspondence and other technical documents.
  • Coordinate study participant activities and will occasionally be involved in the collection of information from study participants through interviews, administration of tests, surveys or questionnaires.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of neuroimaging databases and records for compliance purposes.
  • Generates analyses of neuroimaging data according to project schedules as well as on an ad hoc basis.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: High school or equivalent
  • Minimum Experience: 1 year
  • Minimum Field of Expertise: Knowledge of data collection procedures and some experience with proposal preparation and production of technical documents

The successful candidate will have experience participating in neuroimaging studies which involve computer-based methods for the analysis of MRI/CT data sets acquired from human volunteers to quantify brain structure changes following traumatic brain injury during middle age and late adulthood. Familiarity with image processing workflows and with neuroimaging analysis (FreeSurfer, AFNI, FSL, SPM or similar) would be highly beneficial. Linux scripting and programming experience (MATLAB) would also be very helpful, as would technical writing skills and a scientific publication record. Will be able to work independently with a small amount of supervision and should demonstrate good interpersonal skills as well as an interest in collaborative research. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent doctorate in neuroscience, neurobiology, engineering or other quantitative science is highly recommended.
