Research Associate

Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Department Los Angeles, California

USC's KSOM Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join Dr. Neil Segil’s Lab.

The research lab studies deafness and balance disorders resulting from the loss of sensory hair cells of the inner ear which are a major cause of disability and morbidity in the US.  Hearing loss resulting from the death of hair cells in the ear is permanent, and treatments aimed at reversing hearing loss through stimulated regeneration of hair cells are badly needed.  We will apply powerful new “direct lineage reprogramming” technology to induce sensory hair cell-like cells from more basic cell types.  These induced hair cells will be used to develop tools for drug discovery to address the problems of hearing loss, as well as in translational experiments to induce replacement of hair cells in long-deafened animals.

The candidate will be expected to have a knowledge of the techniques and literature of direct lineage reprogramming, molecular biology, and stem cell culture, as well as knowledge of the anatomy, histology, physiology, and developmental biology of the mammalian inner ear.

Plans, designs and conducts highly technical and complex research projects independently and in consultation with supervisor. Analyzes research data and provides interpretations. Contributes to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers and/or records.

Minimum Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate

Minimum Experience: 1 year

Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience in research specialization with advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures and analysis methods.
