Research Integrity Officer - Office of Research

Office of Research - Senior Leadership Los Angeles, California

Reporting to the Vice President of Research, the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) for the USC Office of Research (OOR) has responsibility for promoting and assuring the ethical conduct of research across the university. The RIO will lead initiatives to foster responsible conduct of research, research training, and activities related to said research and/or research training. The RIO will also receive and handle allegations of scientific, research, and/or other scholarly research misconduct that includes fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results. The RIO implements federal regulations, sponsor policies and USC policies; manages inquiry and investigative process, and responds to allegations of research misconduct; and develops written policies and procedures for responding to allegations of research misconduct.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert as it pertains to research integrity/compliance concerns
  • Oversee the process of fielding/handling allegations of scientific and/or research conduct involving members of the USC community
  • Establishes and promotes a culture of compliance and integrity whereby all scholarly research is conducted in an ethical manner
  • Identifies and develops policies and procedures pertaining to research integrity and/or compliance for the USC OOR
  • Serves as a representative of the USC OOR in dealings with governmental agencies and key committees across the university
  • Provides appropriate training to university constituents, as it relates to research integrity
  • Keeps abreast on all of the state laws, federal regulations and national trends influencing issues related to research integrity/compliance
  • Works closely with key constituents across the university, including, but not limited to: the Office of the Provost, Office of the General Counsel, Office of Compliance and liaise with individual schools

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • A Juris doctorate AND/OR a graduate degree in engineering, science or medicine

Experience:

  • 10+ years of relevant and applicable experience
  • 3+ Years of experience working in a Tier 1 Research Institution in a research setting
  • Possess a breadth of knowledge pertaining to federal, state and university laws, policies and procedures pertaining to research
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to manage a caseload of complex and intricate investigations
  • Proven experience in fostering and maintaining key relationships with internal and external constituents
