Research Programmer I

Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics (Schaeffer Center) is seeking a Research Programmer I to join its team. This is a two year (renewable), fixed-term position.

The Research Programmer I provides programming support to a research project. Develops and/or adapts computer systems that are complex and very large in scope. Interfaces with researchers to determine system requirements to support research. Designs systems to satisfy their needs. Writes computer programs to meet system design specifications. May work as a team member on very large projects or work independently on projects of lesser scope but which require competency in all phases of programming and analysis. Utilizes creativity and innovation to solve conceptual programming problems raised by cutting-edge research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MA/MS in Statistics, quantitative social science, mathematics or related field
  • 3 or more years of experience with SAS and Stata. Experience with SQL preferred but not required
  • Experience with large administrative databases, survey data, claims data, health records data
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in solving conceptual programming problems.
  • Ability to work independently on complex programming
