Research Project Specialist, USC Schaeffer Center

Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics is to measurably improve value in health through evidence-based policy solutions, research excellence, and private- and public-sector engagement. With its extraordinary breadth and depth of expertise, the Schaeffer Center will have a vital impact on the transformation of healthcare.

The Schaeffer Center at the University of Southern California is seeking a ResearchProject Specialist to join the Center’s Value of Life Sciences Innovation Program. This is a two year, fixed-term (renewable) position.

The research project specialist will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team including economists, physicians, health policy scholars, data scientists and other researchers to conduct evidence-based, policy-relevant research aimed at improving value in health.  The position will be directly involved in all aspects of the research process, including idea generation, research design, research execution, publication and dissemination.  

Key duties will include:

  • Background research and literature reviews

  • Data collection from a wide variety of sources including the web

  • Data analysis

  • Data presentation (including designing tables and figures for papers/reports/proposals)

  • Manuscript drafting and editing

  • Grant writing

  • Administrative activities related to the research process

Essential skills and characteristics include but are not limited to:

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point

  • Detail-orientation

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Interest in health and pharmaceutical economics

  • Ability to prioritize across multiple tasks and deliver high-quality outputs in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in health economics, public/health policy, health services research, applied mathematics/statistics or related field

Minimum Experience:

2 Years professional experience (education not substitutable) in a social science research position with similar responsibilities

Preferred skills and characteristics:

  • Experience with programming languages such as SAS or Stata

  • Knowledge of various statistical analyses such as OLS, Probit, Logit, etc.

  • Experience with data visualization software such as Tableau

  • Experience with survey design and execution

  • Familiarity with important health policy issues and institutions

Compensation

Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Position is 100% FTE on a 2-year (renewable) fixed term.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The Schaeffer Center was established in 2009 as a research hub for health policy research at USC.  The result of a unique partnership between the School of Pharmacy and the Sol Price School of Public Policy, the Schaeffer Center takes an interdisciplinary approach to advance health policy and health economics. The Value of Life Sciences Innovation (VLSI) project is a research program that aims to place the value of innovation in life sciences into the broader context of social value and the ongoing improvement in general population health. VLSI research focuses on innovation in the life sciences, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and healthcare delivery, and the economic systems through which those innovations are distributed, including the financing and reimbursement processes.
