RN Nurse Practitioner - Physician Assistance - Full Time 12 Hour Nights (Exempt) (Union)

The Cardiology Night Shift Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a NP who works under the direction of the Department’s Administrative and Medical Directors to facilitate safe and efficient care of the Advanced Heart Failure and General Cardiology patient population.  The NP is responsible for the application of the nursing process, supervision of clinical practice, education, leadership, and patient care management.  The NP will function as a part of inter-professional teams by communicating, planning, and implementing care directly with other healthcare professionals, including but not limited to physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners. The Night Shift NP will work with a Cardiology MD overnight with cross cover, admissions, and consults for the advanced heart failure and general cardiology services in the ICU, step down, and general medical floors. This is will require being able to give and receive effective sign out communication and overnight contingency plans, primary coverage for both urgent and non-urgent patient care issues, prompt and appropriate response to nursing calls, proper and timely collaboration and escalation for significant issues to the overnight MD, admission/transfer documentation and orders, and assistance for bedside medical procedures when necessary. The Night Shift NP will also be responsible for presenting brief plans and updates during nightly rounds with the ICU and cardiology team. Experience with VAD, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, post-catheterization/procedural and heart transplant patients is strongly preferred.

The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and nursing profession.  Duties may include obtaining patient health histories and complete physical examinations, documenting findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. May also need to explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, patient’s family, staff, and healthcare learners. Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status. Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s). Formulate and implement treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated primary supervising physician and/or attending back-up physician(s).


Minimum Education: • Master's degree required. Minimum Experience/Knowledge: • A minimum of one to two years’ experience as an NP in Cardiology required • A minimum of 2 years NP experience in advanced heart failure, VAD, mechanical circulatory support, ECMO management and Heart Transplant strongly preferred • 5 years of NP experience preferred • Strong critical and strategic thinking, analytical and planning skills. • Organization/time management skills. • Excellent communication skills • Required License/Certification: • Valid California Registered Nursing license required. • Valid California Acute Care Nurse Practitioner license required. • Valid California Nurse Practitioner license by ANCC or AANP required. • Valid California NP Furnishing and DEA licenses strongly preferred. • BLS for Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association required. • ACLS for Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association required. • Fire and Safety Certification. If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire, and maintained by renewal before expiration date.
