Senior Business Officer I

Department of Psychiatry & The Behavioral Sciences Los Angeles, California

The Department of Psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine of USC is seeking outstanding applicants for a full time Senior Business Officer I (SBO).

The SBO will report to the Senior Clinical Administrative Director and will directly supervise the business functions of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides management and oversight of administrative staff with direct responsibility for contracts and grants administration, HR/personnel and payroll functions, and office management.
  • Participates in and supports strategic planning activities. Conducts financial and strategic analyses of department research and business initiatives; presents results and recommendations to department leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Develops and implements tools, systems, policies, and procedures to streamline business office operations, increase efficiency, and comply with regulatory controls.
  • Trains, mentors, and builds capacity among administrative staff.
  • Develops, implements, and manages the department’s annual budget as well as other short and long-term budgets for specific department initiatives and special projects. Reconciles and oversees reconciliation of accounts and expenditures.
  • Reconciles and monitors revenues, expenditures, and variances. Develops and produces regular and ad-hoc financial operating reports and forecasts; presents to department leadership.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA), Master’s Degree in Health Administration (MHA), or closely related degree

Minimum Experience/Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 8 years of financial, research, and administrative management in an academic medical school/department.
  • Prior leadership and management experience and demonstrated skills in the development and training of administrative personnel
  • Strong knowledge of finance and accounting, organizational structure dynamics, financial modeling
  • Knowledge and experience in pre- and post-award grant administration
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented, and passionate about building administrative infrastructure and supporting strategic growth
  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, collaboration, and consensus building skills
  • Strong project management; analytical; time management; organizational; problem solving; and decision making skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and other software applications and technologies to streamline operations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, analyze, and implement strategies for efficient workflow
