Senior Emergency Management Coordinator

The Office:

The Office of Fire Safety & Emergency Planning (FSEP) oversees fire safety and compliance for all university campuses and facilities. The purpose of FSEP is to help the university manage risk in three key categories:

  • To ensure that all USC facilities are fire-safe, comply with fire codes and regulations, and that all occupants know proper fire response and fire prevention protocols.

  • To ensure that USC is prepared for major emergencies or disasters and is able to respond immediately, protect life and property, restore operations to normal and ensure business continuity.

  • To ensure that events held on campus comply with code requirements and are conducted safely.

The Position:

USC's Office of Fire Safety & Emergency Planning (FSEP) is currently seeking a full-time, experienced Senior Emergency Management Coordinator to support USC’s All-Hazards Emergency Response and Recovery Operations Plans. Reporting to the Director of Fire Safety & Emergency Planning, this position will lead projects related to emergency planning, develop and conduct training exercises and large-scale drills, and respond to emergency incidents, providing emergency management subject matter expertise. The Senior Emergency Management Coordinator will also be responsible for writing plans and preparing after action reports.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develops and maintains emergency response, business continuity and specialized plans

  • Facilitates training, drills to prepare for, respond to, and recovery from emergencies

  • Prepares and coordinates after action reports

  • Develops and presents public information and preparedness education programs for students, faculty, staff and visitors

  • Responds to emergencies and disasters to provide emergency management subject matter expertise

  • Coordinates, designs and conducts emergency management exercises

  • Manages emergency operations technology solutions including virtual emergency operations center, mass notification and SharePoint sites

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

  • 5 or more years’ experience leading emergency management planning and execution

  • Certifications such as Certified Emergency Manager, Associate Emergency Manager, Certified Business Continuity Professional or similar

  • Experience with emergency operations technology solutions including virtual emergency operations center, mass notification and SharePoint sites

  • Demonstrable project management skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and train others, while demonstrating calm and effective leadership, and the capability to make decisions amidst stressful emergency response events

  • Ability to reconcile differing perspectives, develop consensus, and secure cooperation and support from stakeholders and team members.

  • Proven ability to work in a high-volume environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities

  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters

  • Ability to prioritize and organize work, handle multiple assignments and meet competing deadlines

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree Minimum Experience: 3 years. Combination of experience/education as substitute for minimum experience. Minimum Field of Expertise: Three years’ experience leading emergency management planning and execution. Valid driver's license required.
