Senior Research Associate

Center for Excellence in Nano Imaging Los Angeles, California

USC seeks to fill a position of Electron Microscopy (EM) Senior Scientist to perform training and collaborative research in a shared instrumentation facility comprised of electron microscopes and associated sample preparation equipment. The facility serves users from physical and life sciences and engineering.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in science or engineering field with extensive experience in cutting-edge TEM and SEM techniques. Strong EM experience spanning sample preparation (both hard and soft materials) to advanced techniques, including FIB, image filtering, EELS, spectroscopic imaging, tomographic imaging, and STEM microanalysis.  Strong communication skills. At least two years of experience beyond the Ph.D.

Duties

Assist/train users in advanced EM techniques and experiments.

Collaborate with USC user groups to apply advanced EM methods to address research problems on supported research projects.

Organize/coordinate semi-annual symposia/workshops on advanced EM techniques of imaging and analysis, as well as sample preparation techniques. Organize and perform demonstrations/tutorials for users seeking to apply advanced EM techniques.

Develop protocols for performing advanced EM techniques, including training procedures and licensed user tests.

Support/lead preparation of proposals for new instrumentation for nanocharacterization, ancillary equipment, and specimen instruments for the EM facility. Support research proposals that require use of EM facility.

Stay abreast of new developments in instrumentation, techniques, and methods.

Oversee instrument operations and work with research assistants – develop practices and protocols to ensure that instruments and accessories are maintained and function properly, capabilities are utilized correctly, and training is performed properly and efficiently.
