Strategic Sourcing-IT Category Manager

Business Services is seeking an IT Category Manager to join its Strategic Sourcing Team. This position reports to the Director of Strategic Sourcing.

Job Summary:

Lead IT category strategy development and execution for applicable sub-categories (e.g. IT hardware, network infrastructure, software, IT peripherals, etc.), and monitor supplier performance. Partner with IT technical experts to lead sourcing initiatives to drive total cost savings/improvement for the university. Partner with internal customers within Information Technology Services and schools to ensure commodity and supplier strategies are aligned with university needs. Ensure university and customer goals are met. Define and drive strategies to meet current and future business needs.  Serve as a team leader working with buyers and various campus constituents to achieve targeted results.

Job Accountabilities:

Category Management - Develop an understanding of the sourcing categories and supply markets through a combination of research, professional experience, and communications with internal clients. Help determine the primary suppliers for specific categories and evaluate changes within the market to provide guidance for the category as a whole. Work closely with the relevant schools and departments to understand business needs. Develop total cost of ownership (TCO) category and supplier strategies and lead implementation activities. Utilize cost reduction, risk mitigation, and value optimization strategies. Maintain a high level of industry expertise and knowledge of current supply market conditions. Establish sourcing targets based on business needs and requirements. Engage proactively with schools, departments and administration to identify opportunities and develop appropriate sourcing strategies and approaches.  Establish and execute plans to meet or exceed established targets. Manage projects and initiatives with both internal partners/stakeholders and suppliers.  Develop and execute fact-based negotiations strategies and approaches.  Lead mid-range to high-dollar RFI, RFP and RFQ processes as required. 

Supplier Management - Establish and track key performance indicators that will drive continuous improvement across categories and suppliers. Make adjustments to key performance indicators on an ongoing and periodic basis. Report results to management and other key constituents on category initiatives and related projects. Develop category-specific performance indicators and expectations for suppliers. Determine corrective action plan when supplier performance does not meet expectations, communicate action plan expectations to suppliers and monitor the plan to track progress. Meet with the strategic suppliers on a periodic basis to review performance and develop expectations for the next period. Make recommendations to improve the productivity, quality and efficiency of the procurement-related functions. Oversee supplier contract compliance program, including audits, periodic reviews and related activities.

Leadership - Provide leadership and guidance to Business Services and other university team members. Communicate effectively to all levels of the organization on category and supplier information, current and upcoming initiatives and other core activities (e.g. demand management, compliance, process improvements, etc.).  Improve team members’ performance through coaching, development and leadership. Lead strategic supplier management activities focused on total cost, risk assessment, supplier performance management, continuous improvement, and innovation opportunities.


Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree

Minimum Experience: 7 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Experience in negotiating complex supplier agreements, data analytics, and supplier performance management. Experience in developing category strategies and developing and administering RFx processes for Information Technology spend areas.. Possess strong written and verbal communications and presentation skills. Possess team leadership or management experience. Understand business law, legal contracts and financial analysis.

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree

Preferred Experience: 10 years

Preferred Expertise: Deep understanding of the contracting process and strong understanding of legal terms and conditions.
