Student Services Advisor I

The USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences is seeking a Student Services Advisor I in the Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising & Administration. The largest and oldest of the USC schools, USC Dornsife functions as the academic core of the university, offering courses and advancing knowledge across the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
USC’s Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising & Administration is seeking a Student Services Advisor I to join its centralized academic advising team. In their advising role, the Student Services Advisor I is committed to the overall success of assigned undergraduate students majoring and minoring in one of three identified clusters (Humanities, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences). Specifically, the academic advisor helps students understand degree requirements; develop, cultivate, and transform academic goals and educational plans; understand academic policies and procedures; select majors and minors; explore curricular and co-curricular opportunities (i.e., research, study abroad, service learning, etc.); integrate career development opportunities, address concerns and challenges that impact academic success; connect with faculty members and university resources. Student Service Advisors I also liaise with departments to cultivate departmental relationships and provide regular updates and focus area specific training as needed.
Responsibilities include:
Provide academic advising for undergraduate students. Specifically advise students on degree requirements, curriculum, course selection, transfer credit evaluation, and degree related opportunities (i.e. research, study abroad, internships, etc.)
Support retention, progress and graduation of students in identified cluster (Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences) and focus area
Monitor student performance, degree progress, course plans and records
Evaluate student issues (academic, personal, or administrative) and refer students to the appropriate student support services both in Dornsife and beyond
Stay abreast of curriculum, course offerings, and focus area related opportunities based on identified cluster
Understand and execute the conceptual, informational, relational and foundational advising skills needed to support the entire student experience.
Ability to manage multiple majors/minors based on assigned cluster and focus are
Clear understanding of cluster structure, focus area, and how they work under this structure
Maintain knowledge on university related policies and procedures pertaining to curriculum, transfer credit, degree requirements, course evaluations, petitions, and other student services
Support and coordinate various academic and co-curricular programs including working with campus partners on behalf of student population.
Represent Dornsife academic advising at all student related events, including welcome events, commencement, and transfer student orientations
Liaise with identified department(s) to ensure most up to date information is provided to specific academic advising teams
Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and administration based on cluster & focus area
Interface with parents as needed and provide resources to facilitate problem resolution
Maintain professional knowledge through participation in associations, committees, workshops, and other means of networking
Keep supervisor abreast of all student issues impacting progress toward degree, both curricular and co-curricular

Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or Master’s degree
1-3 years of experience
Knowledge of USC student and academic programs, policies, procedures and knowledge of the student information system
Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum requirement
The hourly rate range for this position is $29.68 - $33.16. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer alignment, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
