The USC Radio Group seeks a President to lead a successful, thriving organization with an ambitious vision.  The USC Radio Group has 12 FM stations and a robust digital presence in Southern California and the Bay Area providing the only classical radio service for 1.5 million listeners.  The stations are licensed to the University of Southern California (USC), one of the leading research universities in the nation with an unparalleled commitment to classical music and the arts.  With an annual budget of $15 million, a $130 million comprehensive campaign underway, talented staff, and a strong strategic plan the USC Radio Group is well-positioned for future success.


The USC Radio Group operates the only classical music stations in Southern California and the Bay Area (KUSC and KDFC). KUSC is the largest and most listened to non-profit classical music station in the country and is located in downtown Los Angeles. KDFC is located in the SOMA district of San Francisco.

A broadcast service of the University of Southern California, the USC Radio Group is dedicated to making classical music and the arts a more important part of more people’s lives by presenting high quality classical music programming, and by producing and presenting programming featuring the arts and culture of the communities it serves. Together, its stations serve nearly 1.3 million weekly FM listeners and 250,000 monthly live stream listeners worldwide.

USC Radio Group is the driving force behind the success of rich, diverse arts communities in Greater Los Angeles, Palm Desert, Santa Barbara, the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay. USC Radio is a much-needed portal to more than 1,500 arts organizations in these regions.


The USC Radio Group President will be a visionary leader able to lead a high profile organization that is part of a very large, complex academic institution.  S/he will bring a genuine passion for the arts and for the organization’s mission coupled with deep experience leading a successful public radio enterprise or nonprofit arts institution. 

REQUIREMENTS:  Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree; an advanced degree is preferred.  Knowledge of classical music with 10-15 years experience leading a large public radio operation or a related nonprofit organization or leading a large department in a very large organization.  This position is based in Los Angeles and requires frequent travel throughout the state of California.

The President will embrace and have a true passion for the mission of the USC Radio Group and a commitment to the arts. Driven by the mission to preserve classical music as a living art, this individual will be a thoughtful and engaged leader, cognizant of the long history of the organization, its culture, and its impact. The President will have the character, flexibility, dexterity, and pioneering mindset to lead the organization in times of great societal and technological change.

Strategic Leadership: 

The President of the USC Radio Group will be a strategic and results-oriented leader who guides and articulates a vision for the USC Radio Group’s future consistent with the USC strategic plan and evaluates outcomes with a metrics-based approach. This professional will have extensive experience leading an organization or a large department in a much larger organization and developing a strong network of supporters.  S/he will flourish in a mission-driven yet systematic, process-driven environment working with boards, senior leaders, and the staff to ensure the organization has strong plans for broadcast programming, digital, community engagement, and fundraising. 


The President will have the ability to articulate a compelling vision for the USC Radio Group and explain its strategic initiatives, inspire confidence in donors, and assist with closing gifts.  The USC Radio Group President will work with the development leadership to ensure they have the resources they need to do their work and set meaningful, significant and attainable goals for major giving and campaign. 

Finance and Administration:

The President of the USC Radio Group ensures that the organization operates in accordance with all USC policies and procedures and is in sound financial condition including a balanced budget, adequate reserves, and building endowment.

Persuasive Communicator:

The President will be a confident and articulate communicator with the ability to work fluidly across all levels and a charismatic, high-energy leader who can talk with all constituents and successfully convey the USC Radio Group’s objectives. S/he will be an exceptional presenter and communicator with strong interpersonal skills and a natural ability to convey KUSC and KDFC priorities in a way that builds trust and galvanizes support. With an inherent ability to listen, think, and respond effectively to a variety of inquiries and challenges, s/he will be able to remain firm and steady in delicate situations and in high-level strategic discussions.

Team Builder:

The President will invest in the development of a strong leadership team to carry out strategy and plans. S/he will be a solicitous team player, working closely with senior leaders and staff to support the overall mission, and to position the organization to achieve the greatest possible impact for continued and future success. S/he will bring together as a team very different people with different skill sets and embrace the station’s culture while continually innovating to help expand the brand and reach. The President will be an empathic leader, treating others with respect. S/he will be an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics and values; someone who can be trusted without reservation.

Minimum Experience: 5 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Prior experience in a station management position.
