Human Resources Manager - Information Sciences Institute

The University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI) seeks an experienced, resourceful, proactive, tech-savvy, and collaborative leader to serve as Manager of Human Resources (HR). Reports to the Human Resources Director, and in coordination with the HR Director the HR Manager manages complex human resources functions including special recruitment programs, affirmative action, salary administration, staff planning, training, employee relations, disability, workers' compensation, personnel records and information systems. The HR Manager partners with the HR Director and division directors to provide clear information, advice, and counsel regarding human resources processes, policies, and procedures to ensure the best possible support and environment for Institute faculty, students, and staff.

The Information Sciences Institute, a unit of the Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, computer networks, cybersecurity, medical informatics, and other computing and communications technologies. ISI’s faculty, professional staff, and graduate students carry out extraordinary information sciences research at three distinct locations—Marina del Rey, California, where this position will be located; Arlington, Virginia; and Waltham, Massachusetts.

USC Viterbi School of Engineering, consistently ranked in the top ten engineering schools in the United States, is achieving new heights through research and educational leadership in crucial realms of technology and innovation: information sciences, biomedical engineering, and homeland security, among others. In addition to the Information Sciences Institute, Viterbi is home to more than 45 research centers and institutes, including three National Science Foundation-funded engineering research centers and the first University-based center of excellence funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. ISI is by far the largest research institute in Viterbi, raising more than 50% of all external research funding of the Viterbi School.

ISI’s incoming HR Manager must be an experienced and goal-oriented leader who, in coordination with the HR Director, will effectively manage operations and staff involved in the administration of personnel programs and services; plan and develop targeted recruitment and placement activities designed to meet ISI’s very rigorous ongoing sponsored research needs; partner with hiring managers to advance and implement the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness (DEI) initiative, and maintain statistics necessary to determine effectiveness of programs; oversee salary administration; work with management to project current and future staffing needs and resources; develop short and long-range plans for effective recruitment, career development, and staff utilization; develop and maintain a strong presence on social media, and use that platform to help identify, cultivate, and attract promising researcher talent; identify/develop programs to meet staff training needs; work to resolve internal employee grievances, coordinating with university offices as appropriate; interact with Benefits, Disability and Worker's Compensation to provide necessary coordination; and direct the appropriate maintenance and processing of confidential employee records.

Overall, the HR Manager will play a major role in planning and carrying out human resources initiatives and services that are essential to the Institute, including talent acquisition, workforce planning, diversity promotion, organizational development, change management, compensation planning and administration, and performance management, as well as other human resources services essential to ISI’s cutting edge and competitive information technology research environment.
