Research Programmer I

Information Sciences Institute Marina del Rey, California

Information Sciences Institute (ISI), a unit of USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced information processing, computing, and communications technologies. ISI operates one of the world’s largest academic high-performance computing clusters. ISI has three research campuses:  one in Marina Del Rey, CA; one in Arlington, VA; and one in Waltham, MA.

*This position can be located in either Marina del Rey, CA, or in Waltham, MA.

ISI seeks applicants for a research programmer position. A successful candidate for this position will have a degree in Computer Science or a related field and the relevant work experience to provide strong technical knowledge in programming and analysis. Experience or coursework in at least two of: speech recognition, natural language processing, computer vision, machine learning and knowledge representation is required. 

Successful applicants to this position will contribute to a multi-university effort that will develop techniques for building a synthesized semantic representation of the content of available in speech, text and images. Algorithms will produce alternative interpretations of an individual data artifact and update a shared semantic representation as new data is received. Novel algorithms developed for this effort will de-conflict interpretations and generate hypotheses about missing information.

Other projects at ISI include: approaches for machine translation and cross-lingual information retrieval with minimal training data, the automatic extraction of causal information from text, extraction to support forecast world events.

Research programmers at ISI participate in research projects by developing or adapting systems both large and small in scope. They implement state-of-the-art machine learning techniques in consultation with researchers and they contribute to research designs, develop prototype implementations, run machine learning experiments, and participate in the preparation of papers describing the research. Research programmers employ creativity to develop innovative solutions to programming problems encountered in performing cutting edge research. As an academically situated institute, ISI encourages development of and contributions to open source tool kits.

Necessary skills include experience with Unix/Linux and git as well as a strong programming background in at least one of Python, C++, or Java; experience with toolkits such as kaldi, moses, torch, tensorflow or theano is an additional bonus.
