Senior Computer Scientist - Optical Communications

Information Sciences Institute Waltham, Massachusetts

USC’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI), a unit of the university’s Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, information processing, computing, cybersecurity, and communications technologies. ISI’s 400 faculty, professional staff and graduate students carry out extraordinary information sciences research at three distinct locations - Marina Del Rey, CA; Arlington, VA; and Waltham, MA.

*This position is located in Waltham, MA.*

Information Sciences Institute (ISI) seeks a Senior Computer Scientist. This person is needed to serve as the Lead or Principal Investigator for projects involving optical communications, free-space optics, mid-wave & long-wave infrared sources and detectors, optical communications system design, integrated photonics design and test and/or nonlinear optics.

The selected applicant must obtain and maintain a security clearance. Per U.S. government regulations, eligibility for this clearance requires U.S. citizenship. Current clearance is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in physics, electrical engineering or optical engineering + 5 years of experience
  • Experience required in SOME of the following areas:
    • optical communications
    • free-space optics
    • mid-wave and long-wave infrared sources and detectors
    • optical communications system design
    • integrated photonics design and test
    • nonlinear optics
  • Experience required in
    • Business development/proposal writing
    • Serving as a principal investigator leading sponsored programs
    • laboratory design

Minimum Education: Doctorate, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 5 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Knowledge of research processes and computer science. Ability to take specific research problems, apply computer science principles, and derive solutions. May possess a specialized knowledge in one area such as linguistics, psychology, or physics, and be able to bridge the gap between that specialized knowledge and the physical constraints of machine architecture. Ability to interact with other project members in a positive and constructive manner to reach solutions to research problems.
