Executive Director, Black Alumni Association

The USC Alumni Association (USCAA) – within the Division of University Advancement – supports the overall advancement of USC by engaging alumni, building a culture of philanthropy among the Trojan Family, and being the representative voice for all USC alumni.  With more than 425,000 members worldwide, USCAA provides benefits, services and opportunities to connect Trojans to one another and the University through signature events and programs including reunions, industry networks, school-based and regional groups, affinity networks and multicultural alumni associations.

USC’s University Advancement – Alumni Association is seeking an Executive Director, USC Black Alumni Association to join its team. The Executive Director reports to the Associate Senior Vice President for Alumni Relations and is responsible for the day to day management and strategic direction and development of USC’s Black Alumni Association.

Founded in 1976 by Rev. Dr. Thomas Kilgore Jr., the BAA is a leadership network established to strengthen the legacy of educational attainment and excellence of USC’s Black students. The BAA provides scholarship assistance, career mentoring and cultural advocacy through alumni networking, volunteer involvement, philanthropy and social enterprise.

The primary objective of the BAA is to enable the most ethnically diverse and inclusive experience for USC students, alumni and supporters through leadership, networking and shared values—and to honor the rich legacy, contributions and participation of Black Trojans in the university and alumni communities.

The BAA Executive Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the BAA including program fundraising to grow the BAA's $6 million endowment; management of and collaboration with the BAA Advisory Council (BAC); supervision of BAA staff and directing all aspects of the BAA scholarship, mentorship and alumni engagement programs.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donor support for the BAA scholarship program which has awarded nearly $5 million to support more than 4,000 students since 1976

  • Managing, and soliciting contributions for the BAA endowment.

  • Overseeing annual engagement and fundraising events including the annual BAA Pinning Ceremony, Homecoming Legends Tailgate, Leadership Summit and Scholarship Benefit which generate support for BAA scholarship and alumni relations programs.

  • Cultivating candidates for the BAA Advisory Council, who in turn serve to support and advance BAA goals

  • Working closely with campus partners including offices and colleagues in the Student Affairs, Enrollment Services, Admissions, Financial Aid and others as necessary to achieve goals and mission of the BAA.

  • Providing advising and other support for BAA scholarship recipients toward their retention and graduation.

  • Developing partnerships with community organizations, corporations, and other appropriate organizations, in support of the mission and goals of the BAA.

  • Engaging in strategic planning for the future development and continued viability of the BAA program.

  • Working closely with colleagues in the USC Alumni Association, the Division of University Advancement in support of achieving the Division’s strategic goals.

Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.  The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Successful candidates will havea strong background in management and fundraising, preferably in a university or non-profit setting; previous leadership directing organizations and programs involving the Black community; experience in a university setting and/or working with college students; demonstrated experience organizing large scale events; strong publispeaking skills; and the ability to work collaboratively. Knowledge of federal financial aid policies highly desirable.
