POSITION SUMMARY

The laboratory must have one or more technical coordinators who, under the direction of the Manager and Laboratory Director, provide day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. In the absence of the director, the technical coordinator must be responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results. The technical coordinator is directly responsible for planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the flow of work within the designated area so that quality and efficiency is maintained at the highest level. Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.
  • Consults regularly with the Director of Laboratory Services regarding the activities and developments in his/her section.
  • Encourages other employees’ professional growth by sharing knowledge acquired through study of current literature and attendance at seminars and in-service programs.
  • Ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly. Formulates technical and administrative changes for the Director of Laboratory Services review and approval.
  • Implements prudent materials management policies so that supplies are maintained at an appropriate level thereby reducing the need for frequent counting of physical inventory ultimately eliminating purchases outside of the established cycle.
  • Instructs other employees in the theory and technique of technical procedure ranging from the elementary to the most specialized. Assists employees in solving work related problems or difficulties.
  • Ensures that all preventive and corrective equipment maintenance is performed in a timely manner with appropriate documentation.
  • Ensures that the section under his/her supervision is in compliance with the accrediting and licensing agencies' requirements.
  • Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Is responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel.
  • Makes sure that quality controls values are posted as required. Ensures that deviations outside the accepted limits are investigated and corrective actions are instituted and documented in a timely manner.
  • Manages personal work time effectively so that administrative deadlines are met without delay. Set examples to subordinates for efficient time management.
  • May be assigned to coordinate continuing education activities, lectures, presentations and special projects as defined by the Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Must be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Must be on site to provide direct supervision when high complex testing is performed by any individuals; and personnel performing testing and reporting test results.

  • Performs patient responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
  • Prepares and writes policies and procedures so that employees (both lateral and vertical) do not rely just on his/her own knowledge.
  • Provides input to performance evaluations and may initiate disciplinary action as necessary. May effectively recommend the hiring, firing, promotion, demotion or discipline of employees under his/her supervision. May participate in the interview of applicants as requested.
  • Providing orientation to all testing personnel; and CLS students.
  • Recognizes the administrative changes in staffing and scheduling and adapts to these changes.
  • Responsible for ascertaining the reliability of all test results making sure that normal ranges for appropriate age group are used for referral. This includes the investigation and documentation of all technical problems within the section, and implementation of corrective action.
  • Responsible for ensuring that medical technologists under his/her supervision are trained in the use of the computer.
  • Responsible for identifying quality assurance indicators, establishment of criteria for indicators, and collection of data to be included in quality assurance reports.
  • Responsible for obtaining coverage in his/her area when an employee calls in ill. Assists other sections in providing coverage.
  • Responsible for performance of research and development responsibilities relating to own area of supervision in order to implement new testing programs as necessary. May recommend appropriate research and development activities to other supervisors.
  • Responsible for understanding and participating in the organization-wide Quality Improvement Program through orientation; education; departmental and interdepartmental quality control; quality improvement; and quality planning activities.
  • Reviews all outgoing reports for technical and clerical errors. Prepare a written report for the Director of Laboratory Services to review so that appropriate corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner.
  • The technical coordinator is responsible for day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operation.


Education Minimum (Required) • Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited institution plus completion of a one-year internship in Medical Technology or equivalent or higher degree is a requirement. • Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, ore medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Work Experience Minimum (Required) • A minimum of four years’ experience as a Medical Technologist in the specified area supervised. • Demonstrates ability to handle specific problems tactfully and diplomatically. • Must meet CLIA requirements for General Supervisor for High Complex Testing. Licenses and Certifications Minimum (Required) Must possess California license, preferably certified by ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) and additional certification in area supervised.
