Accounting Technician

About the Opportunity
The Accounting Technician at USC Payroll Services plays a pivotal role in executing a variety of accounting responsibilities. This includes processing, reconciling, monitoring, and reporting accounting activities. Additionally, the role involves handling state tax adjustments, coordinating administrative tasks linked to processing tuition assistance benefits, and providing other accounting support activities as needed. The Accounting Technician also performs departmental supply purchases and related transactions. When necessary, they may assume a leadership role to ensure seamless operations.
Accountabilities:
- Enters data from various source documents into accounting systems. Reviews source data for completeness and accuracy prior to input. Ensures compliance with internal policies and external regulations and restrictions. Rejects and returns documentation as appropriate.
- Records, balances and reconciles account activity. Identifies potential problems and researches to provide background or comments. Produces and distributes related reports. Verifies accuracy of reports prior to distribution. Maintains documentation for audit purposes.
- Sets up and maintains accounts, ledgers, journals, files, blanket requisitions, reports and/or other documentation for departmental or university accounts. Assists with month-end and year-end closings, as needed.
- Prepares and submits accounting documents for processing. Determines appropriate fund allocations and secures proper approvals.
- Monitors outstanding or suspense items. Researches documents and follows-up to clear or adjust items.
- Performs one or more specialized accounting duties including, but not limited to, monitoring receivables, collecting past-due accounts, controlling cash or negotiable items and monitoring related inventory procedures.
- Confers with faculty, staff, students, researchers or external contacts to provide information and/or resolve problems relating to financial transactions. Provides technical support for accounting issues.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
Job Qualifications
The ideal candidate for the position of Accounting Technician meets the following preferred requirements:
- 2 years of experience
- University accounting experience
- Demonstrated excellence in computer/technology skills; proficiency with Workday Financials and Student Information System (SIS); advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel
- Payroll experience is a plus
All candidates for the position of Accounting Technician must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Associate’s degree; however, combined experience / education as a substitute for minimum education
- 1 year of experience
- Related bookkeeping / accounting experience
- Knowledge of bookkeeping / accounting practices and principles
- Ability to use a variety of bookkeeping / accounting software applications (e.g., databases, spreadsheets), as required.

The hourly rate range for this position is $24.54 - $27.53. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
About USC Payroll Services
The USC department of Payroll Services is responsible for processing and distributing pay for over 29,000 USC employees. In addition, USC Payroll Services:
- Withholds and remits state and federal taxes, as well as other mandatory and optional deductions
- Ensures distribution of accurate W-2 tax forms
- Provides payroll related customer support to the University community
- Manages Nonresident Alien payments
- Responds to unemployment claims and income verification inquiries
