The mission of the USC Rossier School of Education is to prepare leaders to achieve educational equity through practice, research and policy. We work to improve learning opportunities and outcomes in urban settings and to address disparities that affect historically marginalized groups. We teach our students to value and respect the cultural context of the communities in which they work and to interrogate the systems of power that shape policies and practices. The course is designed for candidates to learn how to develop curriculum and plan for a range of pedagogical approaches that promote culturally responsive practices in diverse instructional contexts. Instructors are expected to engage teacher-candidates in planning curriculum and lessons, enacting practice to realize the USC Rossier Mission Statement, assessing students for equity, and engaging in critical reflective practice to deepen understanding of the relationship between teaching and learning. The course is the first of 3 pedagogy courses in the Master of Arts in Teaching program and the instructor for this course would be eligible to teach the subsequent pedagogy course. The focus of the first two pedagogy courses will be in Literacy (ELA), History Social-Science and the Arts and the instructor is expected to have expertise in these areas.
