Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Regulatory and Quality Sciences (Teaching Track)

The USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Regulatory and Quality Sciences (http://regulatory.usc.edu)  invites applications for a full-time, 12-months per year, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the Teaching Track who has strong expertise in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), International Council for Harmonization (ICH) quality standards, Quality System Regulations (QSR), and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the highest level of quality and compliance in the medical product manufacturing industry.  Specific expertise and experience in medical devices is being sought for this position.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of coursework primarily at the doctoral and master’s levels with some participation in undergraduate education. As a Teaching Track faculty member, the candidate will be expected to combine teaching, mentoring, advising for a total of at least 80% of USC activities. This will include teaching, course development, and doctoral thesis advisement, with excellence in these pursuits demonstrated and fulfilled toward consideration for promotion. Scholarly activities and university service are important contributions for the well-rounded faculty candidate’s recruitment and success.

The candidate will additionally support the development, analysis, and application of educational and research proposals and implementation within the department. A track record of accomplishment is expected: (1) professional and scholarly activities in regulatory, clinical, and/or quality (2) a publication record documenting both self-directed and collaborative research.

The position would include the performance of the following educational activities:

  • Teaching and coordinating invited speakers and other faculty for approximately 35-50 hours per course; two to three courses per term
  • Creating and delivering engaging lectures, workshops, and training materials related to medical product quality assurance, GMP, ICH guidelines, QSR, and ISO standards for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Conduct classroom instruction, facilitate discussions, and mentor students in medical product quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance/control practices. Provide guidance and support for student projects, research, and dissertations.
  • Develop assessment tools, evaluate student performance, and ensure program objectives and learning outcomes are met. Provide constructive feedback for student growth and development
  • Holding office hours at a frequency adequate to allow students to ask timely questions specific to lectures and deliverables
  • Developing curriculum for regulatory and quality science courses
  • Meeting with DRSc students regularly to guide them in their research activities and thesis development
  • Advising graduate and undergraduate students conducting regulatory science research
  • Developing experiential learning opportunities for MS, DRSc, and BS students
  • Conduct independent research in the field of medical product quality, GMP, ICH guidelines, QSR, and ISO standards. Publish research findings in reputable scientific journals and present at conferences.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest regulations, guidelines, and industry best practices related to medical product quality, GMP, ICH guidelines, QSR, and ISO standards, and assist in their integration into the program.
  • Contributing to activities conducted by DK Kim International Center for Regulatory Science

As a faculty member, service to the school through active participation is expected.  Routine faculty administration and participation duties, such as attendance at departmental and full faculty meetings and committee service, as well as annual review submissions and peer-to-peer teaching evaluations are expected. The faculty member should also contribute to the growth of the profession through service on a national level. Inclusive teaching methods and expert use of pedagogical techniques and technologies is expected.  Qualified candidates will preferably have demonstrated experience or leadership in diversity and inclusion within their prior academic and professional work environments that they can bring to the educational setting. This position does not lead to consideration for tenure.

Educational Requirements:         

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in a relevant field (pharmacy, medicine, biomedical engineering, regulatory science, for example). Greater demonstrated levels of academic and educational accomplishments and leadership skills are expected for those considered for the associate professor and professor ranks, commensurate with the standards used for promotion at USC.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A strong background in regulatory and quality sciences through professional experience in biopharmaceutical, and specifically in the medical device industry and/or regulatory agencies
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), International Council for Harmonization (ICH) quality standards, Quality System Regulations (QSR), and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards
  • Demonstrated expertise in education and scholarly activities including curricular development and course management
  • Proven ability to collaborate with industry professionals, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • A proven track record of research and publication in regulatory and quality sciences related to drugs, biologics, medical devices, or other FDA regulated products; specific examples of publications should be submitted or accessible
  • A desire to create and deliver novel, experiential curricula to enhance student learnings
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of varied instructional strategies and technologies that engage students, including cooperative and practical learning methods
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to supervise thesis work of students in the doctor of regulatory science program

Qualified candidates will preferably have demonstrated experience or leadership in diversity and inclusion within their prior academic and professional work environments that they can bring to the education setting.

Compensation and Benefits:

The University of Southern California offers a competitive salary within an academic environment based on the candidate’s experience and accomplishments. The rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor is provided commensurate with the research and scholarly accomplishments, assessed teaching capabilities, and expertise and demonstrated leadership in the field of study.  The University also offers excellent benefits and options to employees, which include: health, dental and life insurance; tuition assistance; disability and retirement plans; credit union membership; and participation in cultural and social events, as well as access to athletic and recreational facilities.

The annual base salary range for this position is $135,000 - $180,000 depending on academic rank. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations

This position does not lead to consideration for tenure. Re-appointment and eventual promotion are expectations based on performance assessment and assessed yearly in merit peer review and longitudinally via administrative review. Excellence in teaching will be evaluated using teaching metrics and evolving assessments strategies and rewards of the School and University, including those leading to continued appointment.
