Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics (Division of Cardiology) CHLA

The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in the Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Cardiology, are actively seeking a full time faculty member for the position of an attending pediatric cardiologist faculty, with specialization in Noninvasive Imaging, at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics.

Candidates should be academically committed and clinically trained in noninvasive pediatric cardiac imaging, with expertise in the performance and interpretation of pediatric transthoracic, transesophageal, and fetal echocardiography; they should have a broad exposure to, and familiarity with, congenital and acquired cardiac diseases. This opportunity is primarily focused on junior or mid-level faculty with skills and experience in all of the aforementioned areas, although suitably trained candidates will be considered pending completion of a 4th year imaging fellowship.

 Advanced imaging skills/experience in 3D/4D echocardiography, exercise echocardiography, and quantitative methods of cardiac evaluation (including deformation/strain analysis and evaluation of diastolic function) will be advantageous for the candidate. A strong working knowledge of cardiac MRI for quantitative and qualitative pediatric cardiac assessment would also be helpful, but is not a prerequisite for this position. Candidates should also demonstrate a rigorous academic focus—ideally with a history of research/investiga­tional pursuits and publications in peer-reviewed journals—and a clear intention and well-defined plan for continued research, publication, and teaching throughout their careers. This position will also include general clinical cardiology duties including rotation in the regular inpatient service, as well as outpatient cardiology responsibilities. Provision of didactic teaching to fellows, residents, medical students and nurses is expected. Night and weekend on-call responsibilities will be shared on a rotating basis with other faculty members in the division.

The Heart Institute at CHLA is the premier cardiac center for children in California and is ranked in the top 5 nationwide.  The noninvasive imaging section of the Heart Institute serves as the hub of cardiac diagnostic imaging for Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery, and for the entire hospital. Well over 10,000 transthoracic, 1000 transesophageal, 900 fetal echocardiograms are performed at CHLA every year. Over 100 exercise-stress echocardiograms, and over 500 cardiac MRIs, are performed annually. There are tremendous opportunities for clinical and translational research in all of the different noninvasive subspecialty areas. Currently, there are ten members of the noninvasive imaging section, which has an established record of national leadership, publications in leading journals and successful grant funding. 

Dr. Paul Kantor, MBBCh will serve as the incoming Director of the Division of Cardiology, and Dr Robert Shaddy, MD serves as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree and have demonstrated research, clinical care, and education capabilities. Candidates must be board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics.
