Assistant Director of Development, Keck Advancement

The Keck School of Medicine of USC stands at the forefront of progress in healthcare and the promotion of health equity, spanning research, education, patient care, and community engagement.

The Keck School seeks to recruit a talented professional for the role of Assistant Director of Development, Keck Advancement. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Assistant Director of Development will raise philanthropic gifts in support of the Keck School’s mission of preparing the next generation of leaders in health. This position will play a crucial role in advancing medical education and scholarship fundraising efforts, with a primary focus on engaging and securing support from alumni who earned their medical degree at USC.

Domestic travel, evening, and weekend events will be required from time to time. Candidates must reside within commuting distance to the USC Health Sciences Campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of leadership giving and major gift donors in support of medical education.

  • Manage a portfolio of alumni prospects across various regions and relationship stages, meeting annual fundraising and activity goals.

  • Utilize email, mail, and phone outreach to proactively identify and qualify new prospects.

  • Assist in fundraising efforts for select reunion classes, collaborating closely with alumni relations colleagues.

  • Draft gift proposals and impact reports with support from development communications and donor relations staff as appropriate.

  • Conduct research to update and expand the donor base, coordinating with the prospect research team when needed.

  • Update and maintain donor records promptly and accurately.

  • Attend USC Fundraising Institute programming and other professional development opportunities.

  • Ensure compliance with all University fundraising policies, goals, and procedures, including responsible for following all protocols for prospect and donor management established and implemented by USC Advancement.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • 3 or more years of experience in development, alumni affairs, constituency engagement, relationship management, or sales, preferably at a complex university setting or equivalent institution.

  • Working knowledge of fundraising principles and practices.  

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; Ability to quickly build relationships across diverse constituencies.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; Ability to articulate the impact of University programs and philanthropic donations.

  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous priorities with a high level of organization and self-sufficiency.

  • A proactive, entrepreneurial, and collaborative approach to work.

  • A passion for philanthropy, social good, education, and health.

Minimum Skills and Experience:

  • 3 years of work experience; relevant education or related experience considered.

  • A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite and ability to quickly learn to use prospect management databases.

  • Ability to follow established USC and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.

The annual budgeted salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
