Assistant Director of Violence Prevention in Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention and Services - Clinical Instructor or Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences (Clinician Educator)

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC seeks an Assistant Director of Violence Prevention for Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention and Services (RSVP) within USC Student Health / Counseling and Mental Health (CMH) to join a diverse and dynamic multidisciplinary team who are strongly committed to providing excellent multiculturally and trauma-informed clinical treatment, training, advocacy, prevention, and outreach services regarding gender-based harm and sexual violence. Position Description [Purpose and Scope]

The Assistant Director of Violence Prevention will oversee and organize all violence prevention and outreach efforts and initiatives of Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention and Services (RSVP) unit within USC Student Health. They will provide leadership and supervision to the RSVP Violence Prevention team, as well as manage collaborations and grants related to RSVP violence prevention and outreach initiatives. The position will develop and implement a comprehensive set of programs and services for USC designed to increase awareness of bystander intervention, domestic, dating, and sexual violence and stalking, and increase the development of healthy attitudes and behaviors that reduce gendered-based violence and power-based harm through the provision of evidence based sexual violence/dating violence/stalking prevention education and training to students, faculty and staff, either on-campus, off-campus or online. This includes but is not limited to: prevention workshops; outreach activities; partnerships with campus and academic departments and programs, student organizations, undergraduate and graduate student government, off-campus programs, organizations related to RSVP’s mission, local law enforcement agencies, and more.

This is a full-time faculty position with an academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and clinical service assignment as the Assistant Director of Violence Prevention in RSVP. Salary is competitive and contingent on experience. Description of USC Student Health, Counseling and Mental Health (CMH)

USC Student Health provides a comprehensive campus health program including mental health services, medical services, prevention and health promotion, health communications, the student health insurance plan, and public health services to improve the health of the USC population. Mental Health services support students so that they may achieve their academic and personal goals through the Department of Psychiatry’s Counseling and Mental Health Division (CMH). CMH services include: individual, couples and group counseling; assessment and referral to other professionals and institutions; crisis intervention (including some after-hours coverage); biofeedback; psychiatric evaluations and medication follow-up; consultation; outreach and prevention; and training and supervision. 

CMH provides mental health services to students so that they may achieve their academic and personal goals. Services we provide include: individual and group counseling; assessment and referral to other professionals and institutions; crisis intervention (including some after-hours coverage); case management; biofeedback; psychiatric evaluations and medication follow-up; consultation; outreach and prevention; and training and supervision. 

Description of RSVP

Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention and Services (RSVP) is a campus resource, support, and referral center for gender-based issues of harm and abuse, educational programming regarding gender based harm, advocacy and confidential crisis intervention and short-term clinical services. RSVP provides an immediate response to student survivors who seek trauma-informed therapy, consultation, advocacy and support following sexual/gender-based trauma. RSVP specializes in gender and power-based harm (e.g., sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking) and is part of the Department of Psychiatry’s larger Counseling and Mental Health division within USC Student Health. RSVP exists to facilitate the success of students who have experienced sexual/gender-based harm during their time at USC. RSVP also provides educational and awareness programs to enhance students’ understanding of sexual violence, relationship abuse, stalking, and healthy relationships/sexuality.

RSVP provides a multi-tiered approach to preventing and treating gender-based harm. RSVP utilizes the Social-Ecological Model of Violence Prevention, which serves as one of the field’s best practices and includes a four-level (society, community, relationship and individual) approach to violence prevention. Through education and outreach, RSVP is contributing to immediate increases in community awareness and long-term increases in societal understanding of power-based harm. RSVP serves as a resource throughout USC to train campus staff and faculty in trauma-informed responses to survivors and inform campus policy and procedures. Additionally, by providing treatment for survivors of power-based harm through individual therapy, group therapy, on-campus advocacy, and case management, RSVP is able to address individual-level healing and prevention of re-victimization or the perpetuation of cycles of violence.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the RSVP Director, the Assistant Director of Violence Prevention will:

  • Oversee the prevention team, currently comprised of 7 violence prevention educators (including Lead VPE), a violence prevention curriculum specialist, a male engagement coordinator, and 12 student workers by providing leadership, supervision, guidance, and direction.
  • Assist with oversight and supervisory roles among advocacy, clinical, and education service areas.
  • Assist with supporting advocacy team, currently consisting of 1 part-time and 4 per-diem advocates including shift scheduling, outreaching to students in need, and oversight of services.
  • Assist with supporting clinical team and services to the student population, including support to group and workshop schedules, and administrative clinician supervision (if applicable, based on licensure).
  • Oversee the development and delivery of a comprehensive, multiculturally and trauma-informed curriculum on affirmative consent, healthy relationships, and violence prevention to students, faculty, and staff ensuring best practices.
  • Monitor, track, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of the violence prevention curriculum and delivery/educational methods in collaboration with USC Health Promotion strategy.
  • Represent USC Student Health and RSVP throughout campus, locally and nationally.
  • Promote violence prevention training products and services, and raise awareness of violence prevention resources through RSVP with the Violence Prevention Specialist.
  • Promote survivor support services through RSVP advocacy and clinical groups/workshops.
  • In collaboration with USC Student Health Communications, develop and implement campaigns and other public communications through social media and other channels.
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to ensure prevention programs are compliant with federal/state regulatory requirements and USC policy.
  • Ensure engagement of community stakeholders including USC faculty, staff, and students in the development of all programs.
  • Regularly convene stakeholder groups.
  • Coordinate efforts with other USC Student Health promotion activities and services.
  • Coordinate outreach activities with various campus stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as necessary or assigned.
  • In the absence of the RSVP Program Director, will oversee the operations of RSVP including advocacy, prevention, and clinical service areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s or higher degree in education, public health, social work, human services, criminal justice, gender/ethnic studies, psychology, or related field Multicultural humility and competency in working with students of color, students from all economic classes, first generation students, LGBTQ+ students, and international students Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills 1-2 years of experience coordinating a human services program or college student services program Formal certified advocacy training, or relevant/equivalent job experiences Supervision experience of a trainee, student worker, graduate assistant or staff

Preferred Qualifications:

years’ experience with gender-based, violence prevention programs or similar types of programs 3-4 years of experience managing survivor services or violence prevention programs Certified advocate with work experience Clinical experience or crisis intervention experience specifically working with gender-based violence Understanding of adult learning theory with young adults and the socioecological model of violence prevention Strong public speaking skills Strong appreciation and skills for interacting with young adults (e.g., college students, graduate students, international students, etc.) including work experience on a college campus Curriculum development and assessment skills Resilient, self-aware, and can thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment Ability to balance autonomy, accountability, and collaboration

The annual base salary range for this position is $99,000- $140,000.
