Assistant Director, Regulatory Compliance (Hospitals) - Compliance - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt) (Non-Union)

The Assistant Director, Regulatory Compliance (Hospitals) is responsible for supporting the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive and effective healthcare compliance program, with a specific emphasis on the community hospital entities within Keck Medicine of USC ("Keck Medicine"). This position will assist with the implementation of all elements of an effective healthcare compliance program, including leading training, policy development, monitoring auditing, reporting and enforcement efforts. This position is responsible for coordinating compliance activities between the community hospital entities' senior administrative team and the Office of Healthcare Compliance. This position is also responsible for investigating reports of alleged violations and wrongdoing, as necessary. The Assistant Director, Regulatory Compliance (Hospitals) is expected to provide technical expertise to management, staff and physicians regarding regulatory healthcare compliance issues, and foster within the Keck Medicine community hospitals a culture that promotes integrity and ethical behavior in all matters. This position reports directly to and collaborates closely with the Senior Director, Regulatory Compliance (Hospitals) in the Office of Healthcare Compliance.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists with developing, implementing and maintaining a comprehensive hospital compliance program, with a particular focus on the Keck Medicine community hospitals, that includes training, policies, monitoring, auditing, reporting and enforcement. Assists with ensuring program fully addresses all elements of an effective compliance program and serves to promote compliance by employees and medical staff with Keck Medicine’s code of conduct, standards and policies. Assists with developing short and long-term strategies for hospital compliance initiatives. Assists with designing, implementing, maintaining, and communicating an effective hospital compliance program. Coordinates closely with applicable senior management and administrators regarding hospital compliance efforts.
  • Assists with the development of communications and training for management, employees and medical staff that promotes knowledge of Keck Medicine’s Compliance Program, the available compliance resources, and any applicable regulatory or policy requirements.
  • Collaborates in a proactive manner with Keck Medicine’s community hospital entities’ management teams, staff and physicians regarding compliance risks, controls and new developments in healthcare compliance laws and regulations. Provides subject matter expertise on hospital compliance matters and recommends responses/procedures related to the laws, regulations, and program guidance for Medicare, Medi-Cal and other regulated payers. Coordinates compliance activities with senior administrative teams and the Office of Healthcare Compliance.
  • Assists with developing and implementing the hospitals’ compliance workplan, which includes management of the documentation, coding and billing monitoring program.
  • Creates periodic comprehensive hospital compliance program reports for the Health System Board, entity-level boards, management and appropriate individuals and departments, as needed.
  • Represents the Office of Healthcare Compliance on various committees, as requested.
  • Assists with providing responses to and resolutions of external investigations and audits of the Health System’s community hospital entities by government agencies and payers.
  • Conducts investigations of reports of compliance violations, wrongdoing, etc. Makes recommendations for corrective action, as appropriate. Assists with compliance enforcement and discipline.
  • Conducts independent research in areas pertaining to hospital billing and regulatory compliance. Develops and maintains expertise in specific areas of regulatory compliance as requested. Maintains currency with Keck Medicine policies, applicable state, federal and local laws, regulations and policies. Develops necessary education and training for management and staff regarding payer regulatory requirements and other compliance matters.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The Health System reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree In related field
  • 7 years Related experience dealing with healthcare compliance and/or regulatory issues required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of hospital operations and compliance.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively and tactfully with people at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail and deadline oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree In Nursing, Public Health or Health Administration or • Juris Doctor degree preferred
  • Experience working with or in an academic medical center environment preferred.
  • Hospital compliance and/or regulatory hospital operations experience preferred
  • Certification in Healthcare Compliance preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)



The annual base salary range for this position is $110,240.00 - $181,896.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
