The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California is recruiting an Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs is responsible for providing overall leadership, vision, strategy, and oversight of student affairs and student services. They have authority and responsibility for overseeing all personnel, policies, and activities related to effective management of student services, consistent with the KSOM mission and established Keck School of Medicine culture and competencies. The Associate Dean functions as a primary student advocate in responding directly to student needs and providing resources to assist students during the course of their education. The Associate Dean will be responsible for ensuring that activities related to student affairs are in compliance with accreditation standards. The Associate Dean will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and other administrators in the Office of Medical Education. This is a full-time position with a maximum of 20 percent clinical practice.


Job duties include:

  • Oversee student affairs programs including career advising, wellness, and academic support services.
  • Serve as advocate for student concerns and needs with the faculty and administration.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for assisting students with personal, financial, and educational issues. Manage a triage process to connect students with appropriate resources.
  • Provide for cultural, social, wellness and recreational offerings to enhance the student experience.
  • Monitor student reports of mistreatment.
  • Direct students to resources, policies, and procedures related to ADA rules and provide guidance to students as needed.
  • Advise student government and coordinate activities of other recognized student organizations and student programs.
  • Work with elected student leaders in each class, including providing leadership training and mentoring. Meet at least monthly with student leadership to address student concerns.
  • Monitor data available for students with academic and professionalism difficulties and receive input from teaching faculty. Contact students who are having difficulty to offer assistance.
  • Monitor and maintain student satisfaction with the Office of Student Affairs and student affairs resources.
  • Support and mentor the career development of the assistant dean, directors, and administrative staff who are direct reports.
  • Participate in committees responsible for monitoring student progress through all years of medical school training.
  • Oversee the international studies committee. Ensure students are meeting the University criteria for international travel.
  • Represent the MD program at meetings of the University and Health Sciences Student Affairs Councils.
  • Serve as the Student Affairs Institutional Representative to the AAMC.
  • Review the Student Handbook yearly to ensure policies are up to date.
  • Prepare Medical Student Performance Evaluations for the graduating senior class.
  • Oversee use of the Electronic Residency Application System for the school of medicine.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the National Residency Matching Program, including tracking and certifying students in the main match. Work to counsel students regarding their match list.
  • Act as the primary contact for the other match programs, including the military match, the San Francisco match and the Urology match.
  • Manage the Supplemental Offer and Application Program for unmatched students. Includes selecting and managing faculty advisors and working directly with unmatched students.
  • Oversee the budget for the office of student affairs.
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs to complete all job duties listed above.

Qualifications:

Candidates must possess an M.D., D.O. or Ph.D. with decanal experience in medical education from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five years’ experience in student affairs. Candidates should possess broad administrative and supervisory experience with an in-depth understanding and knowledge of accreditation of undergraduate medical programs, particularly the requirements and expectations of LCME. Familiarity with state and federal regulations pertaining to management of student records and the maintenance of student rights, privacy, and safety (e.g., FERPA, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, Campus Safety & Security Act, etc.) is preferred. The position requires leadership experience, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple work demands.

The annual base salary range for this position is $220,000-$250,000.  When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. We seek candidates with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the School of Medicine and across the University.
