The Media Arts + Practice Division within the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California seeks a candidate for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor of the Practice of Cinematic Arts in the theory and practice of emerging media as it intersects with issues of critical race theory, intersectionality and/or queer studies. We seek candidates whose work represents a genuine combination of theory and practice, and who bring with them a robust research agenda dedicated to innovation in media design and scholarship.
The candidate should be prepared to teach courses related to and using emerging technologies at the undergraduate and graduate levels; to lead students in practice-based research experiences that are attentive to learning; to mentor PhD-level graduate students; and to oversee a research lab.
Experience in one or more of these areas of media art and design is preferred:
• New paradigms of media-based storytelling and scholarship
• History, theory and practice of digital media and transmedia
• Immersive, locative and/or tangible media design
• Interface design and/or human computer interaction
• Critical race theory, intersectionality and/or queer studies
• Augmented and virtual reality
Minimum Education: MA/MFA degree or BA/BFA with equivalent professional experience
Minimum Experience: Five to seven years experience in media design and post-graduate teaching
Preferred Education: PhD in a media-related discipline
About MA+P: The Media Arts + Practice division explores the intersection of emerging technologies and culture, and the ways in which practices such as storytelling, information visualization and user experience expand beyond the entertainment industry to other arenas, including business, education, architecture and urban planning. The division offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Ph.D. in Media Arts + Practice, as well as a graduate certificate in Media Arts and Culture, a Minor in Digital Studies, and an Honors Program in Multimedia Scholarship. Located within the nation’s oldest film school, the Media Arts + Practice Division (MA+P) is closely aligned with the major research labs within SCA, including the Mobile and Environmental Media Lab; the Mixed Reality Lab; the Transient Media Lab and the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture.
